Every time a Republican gets elected President, the economy crashes. Then a Dem gets elected, starts fixing it, but people with the memory span of a goldfish get mad that everything isn’t perfect yet and vote for another republican.

it seems to shock the New Zealand government that Peter Jackson, Taika Waititi, and the Conchords etc all emerged from the same city in the same span, which coincidentally is when Wellington rent was dirt-cheap and there were heaps of empty industrial buildings around

The AI companies are founded on the principle that consent is dead. Think about that for a minute. What is to stop the same AI companies from taking your house, bank account and pension? If consent is dead then the safety net around you goes away. www.computerworld.com/article/4234...

I only started using an ad blocker this passed year. It was the result of frustration at the absolute unusability of virtually any webpage. The underlying issues of the targeted ad landscape are far more grave to users, as Cory Doctorow points out in the following thread.

One time the dog alerted on me, I ended up getting the onset of visual aura literally two seconds before I parked in my driveway. At a speed and trajectory I could finish those last two seconds of correctly in my sleep. Which is way better than having to pull over and wait it out halfway home!

I’ve been thinking about this post and the cognitive and moral perils of abstraction and data-ification. What it does to us when we look at humanity from above. And as ever I come back to my fav ever GK Chesterton passage from his Father Brown short story The Hammer of God
After a moment he resumed, looking tranquilly out over the plain with his pale grey eyes. “I knew a man,” he said, “who began by worshipping with others before the altar, but who grew fond of high and lonely places to pray from, corners or niches in the belfry or the spire. And once in one of those dizzy places, where the whole world seemed to turn under him like a wheel, his brain turned also, and he fancied he was God. So that, though he was a good man, he committed a great crime.”
Wilfred’s face was turned away, but his bony hands turned blue and white as they tightened on the parapet of stone. He thought it was given to him to judge the world and strike down the sinner. He would never have had such a thought if he had been kneeling with other men upon a floor. But he saw all men walking about like insects. He saw one especially strutting just below him, insolent and evident by a bright green hat—a poisonous insect.”
Rooks cawed round the corners of the belfry; but there was no other sound till Father Brown went on.

Just to riff on this for just a moment: science fiction is full of really cool images. Lunar colonies, Martian landscapes, big big rockets, sandworms, blasters, vibroknives, chip heads ... but the thing that always held the story together was how human beings interacted with those BDOs.

So yes, in this case the problem is people not being grownups about it. And that ties in directly with people hand-waving the fascism because “but but all this other COOL stuff!”

There’s nothing inherently fascist about a car that does a kickflip, it’s just a showy bit of nonsense that no one more mature than the average 12yo is going to cream themself over.

I was sick as a dog this week but when I surfaced I was able to work on an essay about why Portugal is dooming itself if it adopts anti-trans measures. Why? In order to oppress a minority, you have to destabilize society for everyone.

Yes Vicky, for all 6 years of your adult life so far it really has in fact been urgent to vote for anyone but the blatant fascists. The argument that voting for the least-bad candidate matters will always be made because it will always be true. Hope that helps and hope you grow up for real soon.

“But it’s cooooool! Sure it’s functionally useless and not what anyone actually uses a car for, and would cause problems if anyone actually did this on the road, but it looks cool and that’s the most important thing” is a deeply immature stance to take, yes.

But but this chart of lotto winners after 5 years shows that lotto winners tend to be bad at managing money and end up broke again. That is definitely generalizable to the entire population, it’s not like it’s a heavily self-selected sample or anything!

If $30k got dropped in my lap right now, I could make a major life change that I’ve been trying to make work out. Money is THE complicating factor. If I suddenly owed a $30k debt, it would wipe out my savings and it would take a decade of good luck to recover.

Lotto players are not a statistically representative sample of the population. They are self-selected for certain traits that involve their ability to manage money wisely.

Again, “people who play the lottery” is not a representative sample of the general population.
