I thought Birdman was great at the time, but I was young and stupid. It didn't take me long to realise it was shit. All of Inarritu's movies are shit. Is Digger shit? I don't know. I don't know what to think.

Sat thinking about it: Amores Perros fits better with the grungier neorealism of 80s Latin American cinema (but bigger budget), Babel with a New Agey wishy washy type of 80s social issue cinema, Birdman hits right after Keaton's Batman spell (by the time it came out, most people saw Bale as Batman)

And living here, one thing that has taken me by surprise is just how demographically narrow the political class is: almost exclusively white, male and privately educated - creating inherently right wing attitudes even when standing for non-right parties. And I live in one of the more diverse states!

In Brazil, there are historically plenty of (legitimate) corruption scandals involving PT (Lula's party) and I'm not talking about the one he was wrongly jailed for. When PT achieved power, they also attracted a lot of career opportunists, just as the LCY did in Yugoslavia.

my take on it is the same as the democratic transition in Yugoslavia in the 90s: you simply cannot have a democracy if nationalists or the far right are allowed a seat at the table, or any participation in the process at all. The question is how to do that without resorting to the basest impulses.
