This week I’m in Oxford for the EECI International Graduate Course on Biological Control Systems. Previous to the course beggining I could sightsee a bit of the city and, in the afternoon, we started with basic model math & theory control for biologists! A tope for today!

Para que os hagáis una idea, en el CSIC una persona contratada como técnico M3, es decir, que se le reconoce el título de máster cobra en 12 pagas 2110€ netos mensuales. Una FPI también en 12 pagas, de mediana cobra alrededor 1380€ netos (depende del año). Basta ya. ¡M3 para todo el mundo!

I don't think the average person is going to learn much by accessing a paywalled scientific paper. But the current system keeps out journalists, science communicators, policy researchers, and fact checkers from reading into a topic as well.

Last week, I was integrating a reporter gene into a Pseudomonas protegens genome. Which were the odds that the *only* colony grown was a true integration? Colony PCR check, no spurious insertions check, sequentiation check! It’s integrated! What a motivation to work this last week before holidays!

In 2016, the Kishony Lab at Harvard Medical School put together this demonstration of acquired antibiotic resistance in E. coli bacteria, creating a mega-Petri dish (2' x 4') with a stepped gradient of antibiotic. Seeing the mutants emerge & spread is an elegant demo of evolutionary change.
