Sometimes I find random plants in my yard like this little Groundcherry deciding to spring up under one of my trees. #naturephotography #bloomscrolling #flowers #plants
The photo shows a groundcherry. The flower hangs slightly downward and has five pale yellow petals with a dark maroon star‑shaped pattern around the center. The stamens form a small cluster in the middle. The leaves are broad, green, and smooth‑edged, with visible veins, and the stems and buds have a faint fuzzy texture.

Ilona Langbroek
Ilona Langbroek (1970)

Stillness, light, memory, and time form the foundation of Ilona Langbroek's photographic practice. Rooted in the layered past of the former Dutch East Indies, her work explores how migration, colonial legacies, and cultural memory continue to shape identities across generations.

A Dutch fine art photographer based in Hilversum, the Netherlands, Langbroek graduated with honors from the Fotoacademie in Amsterdam.

Her acclaimed series Silent Loss emerged from her family's history in the former Dutch East Indies. The Netherlands' long and complex colonial relationship with the region continues to leave profound emotional and cultural traces. Rather than documenting history, Langbroek explores how the consequences of this past continue to resonate across generations through memory, absence, and inherited experiences.

Drawing on personal memory alongside broader cultural histories, Langbroek creates photographs that speak through suggestion rather than explanation. In portraits, still lifes, and interiors, she explores how memory is carried across generations as personal stories become part of a wider collective narrative. Figures often turn away from the viewer or close their eyes, while objects and architectural spaces function as silent witnesses to memory and time.

Working with natural light, muted tonalities, and a carefully composed mise-en-scène, Langbroek creates photographs that seem suspended between reality and imagination. Her painterly use of light recalls the intimacy of Dutch Golden Age painting and resonates with a Northern European sensibility in which light, space, and silence come together in contemplative stillness. Rather than reconstructing history, her photographs evoke its lingering presence through absence, silence, and suggestion.

In the foreground are the silhouettes of trees across the width of the image. To the left, a lone black streetlight is a silhouette in front of the orange sky. The sun has not yet risen above the horizon, but it covers the clouds above it in an orange glow. At the top of the image, the sky is a grey-blue with dark clouds.

Night shot of Stan's Drive-In Restaurant, Los Angeles, California, 1952
Black-and-white photograph from 1952 that captures the night scene at Stan's and their popular location on the northwest corner of Beverly Blvd and La Brea Ave, showing a parking lot packed with vintage automobiles. In 1952, Stan's Drive-In was booming as a premier, fast-growing restaurant chain that perfectly captured the car-centric, optimistic postwar culture of Los Angeles, California. Known for its neon-lit architecture, distinctive pylons, and carhop service, the chain expanded rapidly in the early 1950s by acquiring former Carpenter’s and Simon's drive-in locations.

Sunset in the North Country by artist Andrew Orr (American, born 1969) Year: Circa 2020–2023 (Painted during or shortly following the COVID-19 pandemic period).
This luminous landscape captures a vibrant sunset over the artist's own rural property in Richford, Northern Vermont. Rendered in a style heavily inspired by 19th-century American Tonalism and the Hudson River School, the composition features dense woodlands to the left and two prominent, slender evergreen trees standing in an open field to the right. The setting sun breaks low near the horizon, bathing the heavily textured sky and the open meadow below in warm, gradient layers of golden orange, amber, and soft pink.
