Brenda Milner is a hero and 108!! She did a lot more than discover the hippocampus is linked to declarative memory, but that work is the most famous.

The prefrontal cortex across scales: laminar architecture, white-matter constraints, and distributed control in cognition - Brain Structure and Function
The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is often treated as the anatomical seat of executive control. We defend a distributed but structurally constrained account. The PFC is not an exclusive executive locus; it ...

A study of how psychedelics change brains suggests the drugs reduce bottom-up cortical propagations in the default mode network. In theory, this could help people with ruminative depression, but could cause harm to those at risk for psychosis. In PNAS: ow.ly/PeX050Zef7y
Reductions in ascending activity flow occurred throughout the default mode network but were particularly consistent in posterior-lateral aspects of the default mode network in humans.

If you're interested in emerging ideas in neural interfaces, I humbly suggest my lab's latest: www.nature.com/articles/s42... Neural interfaces create dynamic interactions between the brain & devices. This means mean we need new engineering approaches beyond typical ML to "decode" a static brain
