Hmm. I wanted to like this more, but in the end I found the visual ticks (replicating old betacam tape in places where no cameras exist, to highlight that WE ARE AS VOYEURISTIC AS CHRIS HANSEN) became...

After yesterday's premiere of Ray Gunn was soured by the involvement of some of the worst people in the industry, Travis Knight (Kubo and the Two Strings, Masters of the Universe) and the lovely folks...

Brad Bird has had this one in his back pocket since The Iron Giant days, an honest to goodness noir murder mystery set in the 1930s version of the twenty first century. Think The Maltese Falcon meets ...

Rarely has a film this full of rage been quite so funny. Martin McDonagh creates a movie that is of a piece with The Banshees of Inisherin and In Bruges, that on one hand a portrait of friendship betw...

An unashamedly British, thoroughly violent and sweary adaptation of the 2000AD character, a passion project Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code). Jones and team manage to distill decades of lore and conti...

The viral hype generated by the trailer to this movie perhaps overshadowed the film itself. Yes, raffiawork Alexander Skarsgård is present and correct, as the husband constructed for Olivia Colman's h...

Maybe I liked this more because it's the first film in Severin's Danza Macabra vol. 5 that's actually a Gothic horror, even if it is a very cheesy one. It's also the best-known title in the box. The p...

The second entry in Danza Macabra vol. 5 is also not a horror movie, despite the US title trying to make out it's an Exorcist knock off. It's a drama about a new doctor who comes to a convent-run asyl...

Always fun to get a new Severin Danza Macabra box set. Volume 5 takes us back to Spain, and the first couple of films in the set seem to be here to underline that while it says 'Gothic' on the box it ...

Rewatched on the spanking new blu-ray, and I don't think much has changed. Arthur Kennedy is a terrific choice for a mafia heel, plus the exploitation factor is suitably filled by Malisa Longo (Naked ...

Ole Bornedal's remake of his Danish original shows all the signs of post-production fuckery the Weinsteins were notorious for. Yes, they were hateful shitbags even before all the sexual assault. True ...

Wow. WOW. Everyone really HATED this. Um. Except me. Sorry. I liked it. I seem to just really like Christophe Gans movies. Everything from Crying Freeman (my introduction to the wonder that is Mark Da...

I kind of hate dunking on this one, because MJ Bassett has made one film I liked (Solomon Kane), one where I appreciated the effort (Red Sonja) and a whole bunch of great TV (Reacher, Neagley, Altered...

A lot to unpack here in a film that probably doesn't deserve the effort. Doing a bit of reading on this after viewing, the fact that it's made by two recent UCLA grads with a cast of friends and famil...

Closing out the BFI's Bryan Forbes season is this excellent prison drama. Fine performances all round, especially George Segal's wheeler-dealer and James Fox, the British officer he befriends. But the...

Around three decades ago I used to hate-watch movies with a group of friends over skype (young people, skype was like zoom but worse). Since my riffing pals were in north America, I was often watching...

The romcom-industrial-complex has a huge new source of power in the immense booktok-driven monolith of romance fiction. And since Amazon knows what you're all reading by beaming its algorithm into you...
