In this new post I tease out the differences between “evidence-based” and “research-based” approaches in literacy education and why the distinction matters. open.substack.com/pub/readwrit...

When ‘Evidence-Based’ Starts Meaning Everything… and Nothing
Spend enough time in literacy education and you begin to notice that almost everybody claims research is on their side.

Just shared a new post. I’ve brought together my original article on Reading Recovery, the Reading Recovery Europe response, and my rebuttal. An interesting example of how evidence is interpreted and debated in literacy. open.substack.com/pub/readwrit...

A Response, A Rebuttal, and an Ongoing Conversation About Reading Recovery
For the past number of years, I have been writing and speaking about early reading intervention in Ireland, often returning to the same underlying question: are we providing the right kind of support ...

Following the publication of my recent peer-reviewed paper on Reading Recovery, Reading Recovery Europe issued a formal response. I have now published a detailed rebuttal addressing the claims made. The full rebuttal is available at the following link: drive.google.com/file/d/1DpV0...

Thanks for sharing Mark! It might have come across that I’m very anti spelling tests but I do mention at the end of the piece that retrieval practice and tests of spelling can be useful IF the lists of spellings make linguistic sense or focus on a taught base/root, spelling pattern, etc.

Second, @readwritejen.bsky.social goes for the weekly spelling test. Again, this is a feature of every primary school that I have ever taught in despite a lot of teachers, parents and children really wondering about its purpose. readwritejen.substack.com/p/the-friday...

Very limited, if any, research on this. It is possible that their reading may be happening at a visual or whole-word level; however, accurate encoding requires a more robust and explicit understanding of the alphabetic code. If I come across anything to support this, I’ll let you know.

Not sure of the age of the children in question but if they’re having problems reading non-words, this would indicate gaps in their phonic knowledge. It would also implement a spelling screener to determine patterns in their spelling errors — phonic, morphological, knowledge of spelling rules, etc

Jen O’Sullivan @readwritejen.bsky.social · 24/05/2025
I would gather data on their phonics knowledge to see if there are any significant gaps and support where necessary, but if they’re reading fluently, I’d focus more on spelling.

I’ve come across many kids like this. Writing and spelling is more challenging than reading. Sometimes dyslexic kids get lots of support with reading but don’t necessarily get the same with spelling. Teaching spelling rules, morphology, etymology can be 👍🏼 I recommend Spelling for Life by Lyn Stone

Yet many DEIS schools have designated Reading Recovery teachers looking after only 4-5 children. Our schools can no longer sustain this and early reading intervention needs a radical rethink.

The teacher crisis is having a huge detrimental effect on children with additional needs. Many schools in Dublin are struggling to fill SET posts and those that a filled find themselves incredibly stretched beyond capacity (or are filling in for class teachers in some instances)

Great read ⬇️ Round robin/popcorn reading is very damaging to struggling readers. Also, the feedback given to children to support their reading is minimal. Could be doing so much more with our instructional time.
