Every time someone asks why and how I buy a book a month in this economy, I explain how I schedule months worth of releases every B&N preorder sale. Then one arrives ~per month. It's mostly manga and comics by people I know do good work. Like this one! www.barnesandnoble.com/w/in-your-sk...

Cutting Medicaid means costs are shifted to providers. When patients lose coverage, they turn to ERs for care they can’t afford. Hospitals eat the cost, pass it on to insurers, and your premiums go up. Medicaid cuts mean a worse health care system for EVERYONE.

On chpt 2 of @sophiegilbert.bsky.social’s book and recalling Bethann Hardison’s “Invisible Beauty”. There’s a chilling moment on the shift to girls from behind the Iron Curtain. Showed, not told, how intersecting vulnerabilities left them more exploitable than adult models with literal agencies.

I’ve been reading these lately. I keep them nearby on my shelves because they are examples of an artist using their craft to tell their story, and their history. Poetry, illustration, manga, comedy and even architectural design. These books remind me why art matters, why craft and intention matter.

Feeding Ghosts by Tessa Hulls is one of few books that I would describe as a tour de force. It is layers on layers on layers grappling with inherited histories, stories, lies and responsibilities where complex matrilineal pain is tied to national myths in a moving, intricately illustrated way.
Title page of Feeding Ghosts by Tessa Hull. Black page with white font.Inside first page of Part 2 of Feeding Ghosts by Tessa Hulls. Part title “The collapse of one mythology”. Under title, quote from Ian McLachlan book Shanghai 1949: The End of an Era. Quote is “Is that, I ask myself, the point at which it all ends? The collapse of one mythology, the start of another?…But there is another story yet, as there always is. On the other side of the flat ideology is a knot of personal trauma.”

A slightly precarious stack of twenty-nine books by various trans, non-binary and otherwise gender non-conforming authors. The books are a mix of paperbacks and hardcovers of various sizes, and pretty much all fall under the sci-fi/fantasy/horror umbrella.
