What did Esther Rantzen ever do for us? Entertainment, Investigative Journalism, Rear Seatbelts, Organ Donation, Safer Playgrounds, Childline, Silverline, and worked hard to try to bring assisted dying into the UK, to name but a few. RIP to the Queen of Television journalism.

The RNLI is the closest you will ever get to actual Batman. When rescue is visibly, viscerally, obviously impossible; when the water is a smothering, thundering black wall and the wind is screaming straight from Hell; when you are absolutely going to die: someone’s hand pulls you out and you don’t.

#AlphabetChallenge #WeekKforKn Fantastically detailed knight's parade armour at the Grand Masters Palace, Malta.
Photograph of Grand Master Alof de Wignecourt's parade armour at Valletta.

This is certainly the finest exhibit in the Palace Armoury collection. This full armour includes a reinforcing gardbrace, a guard-a-rein, a shield and a horse's demi-chanfron. The entire surface is covered with the finest 'azzimina' damascening in pure gold and silver. The ground is blued to further juxtapose the damascening. The profusion of rich ornamentation consists of horizontal bands crossed by straps of arabesque scrollwork. Spaces enclose various arms trophies, musical panoplies, fruit and flowers arrangements, all suspended on drapery festoons, the whole presenting a striking scale-like effect. Two motifs clearly allude to the owner, the richly damascened fleur-de-lys, and the Wignacourt family coat-of-arms. Despite its intended use for parades, the armour is still very functional and designed to offer maximum protection in combat.

For my American friends suffering under the yoke of idiocy, you're not alone. £2.13 for a litre of diesel. That's $10.31 a gallon. Admittedly, this is at a motorway service station and the free market means that prices are higher than average when one is just adjacent to the motorway but ouch!
Photograph of the fuel sign outside a Shell Welcome Break petrol station. The illuminated figures indicate the price of petrol/gasoline per litre as 194.9 pence and for diesel fuel 212.9 pence.

As one who is a yet-to-be disabled, very vanilla member of society, it is shocking that attitudes to disability and race have decayed so much over the last 10-20 years. I have believed so much in enabling equality that it is horrifying to be able to corroborate what Mik talks about.

A great many white readers in 1967 were not ready to accept a brown-skinned hero. But they weren’t expecting one. I didn’t make an issue of it, and you have to be well into the book before you realize that Ged, like most of the characters, isn’t white.

A writer is a person who cares what words mean, what they say, how they say it. Writers know words are their way towards truth and freedom, and so they use them with care, with thought, with fear, with delight. By using words well they strengthen their souls.
