Milwaukee is really a great place. I particularly love that neighborhoods have lots of blocks with modest density and 1 or 2 commercial spaces for coffee, food, art, etc. Extremely enjoyable.

The only thing akin to a starter home in Oak Park is... multifamily housing in the form of a condo.

Not a surprise. Also, not a single one of them has anything to worry about since their homes are worth much more than they paid for them 30 years ago and very little will change after these updates because it will take over a decade for any significant increase in density.

The antis show up at these forums but the majority of Oak Parkers find these reforms sensible and largely unremarkable.

Integrating neighborhoods ensures integrated local schools. Oak Park, IL did that for ~50 years, including assisting rental searches (40% rental), adjusting elementary zones, & switching K-8 schools to middle schools. Not claiming utopia but we cherish integration as a core value of the community.

Interesting paper just dropped in the great data center debate and it's not great news. Data centers seem to raise the yields on local govt debt since they have a very low long term multiplier and large perceived externalities on public infrastructure. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

The commute from the Austin stop to UIC regularly takes more than 30 minutes and that's typically after waiting 15 minutes or so for a train to arrive. (Rush hour is a little better for frequency of trains.) One could bike there in that time (especially with electric bikes).
