New JWST image of protostar HH 30, with legend. 🔭 🧪
A close-in image of protoplanetary disc HH 30. Parts of the image are labelled “Jet” (above and below the disc), “Conical Outflow”, “Possible Spiral”, “Dark Lane”, “Disk”, and “Tail”. A scale marker in the bottom-left is labelled “300 au”; this is a little wider than the disc itself, but less wide than the conical outflows above and below the disc

Wake up babe, new JWST image just dropped 💯 🔭 🧪
A close-in image of a protoplanetary disc around a newly formed star. Many different wavelengths of light are combined and represented by separate and various colours. A dark line across the centre is the disc, corresponding to the densest parts of the disc, made of opaque dust: the star is hidden in here and creates a strong glow in the centre. A band going straight up is a jet, while other outflows above and below the disc, and a tail coming off to one side.

IR image of the iconic Horsehead nebula by Hubble. 🔭 🧪
This is an infrared image of the Horsehead Nebula taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. The image shows a dark, horse-head-shaped cloud of dust and gas, known as Barnard 33, rising from a turbulent background of glowing gas and bright stars. The "neck" of the horse faces to the lower left. The image is dominated by hues of red and brown from the dust, with areas of blueish light outlining the edges of the nebula where it is being illuminated by surrounding stars. Numerous stars are scattered throughout the image, appearing as bright white points of light. The overall scene has a dramatic and majestic feel.

Rings of Relativity. GAL-CLUS-022058s is the largest and one of the most complete Einstein rings ever discovered in our Universe. The light from the background galaxy has been distorted into the curve we see by the gravity of the galaxy cluster sitting in front of it. (Hubble) 🔭 🧪
This Hubble Space Telescope image shows GAL-CLUS-022058s, a galaxy cluster dominated by a bright elliptical galaxy at the center. A distinct, almost complete ring of light surrounds the central galaxy. This is an Einstein ring, formed by the gravitational lensing of light from a distant background galaxy as it passes through the massive cluster. The image also reveals numerous other galaxies of various shapes and colors scattered across the field.

This isn't a laser beam. It's a complete galaxy, facing to us at its edge. These are called: "Edge-on Galaxies". This one is NGC 891. Processed by @yuvharpaz.bsky.social nerdculture.de/@yuvharpaz/1... 🔭 🧪
The James Webb Space Telescope’s MIRI instrument has unveiled a captivating side-on view of the spiral galaxy NGC 891. This image presents a breathtaking portrait of the galaxy’s intricate structure, with its prominent dust lane silhouetted against the bright galactic disk. The dust lane, composed of interstellar dust grains, absorbs visible light but glows brightly in the mid-infrared wavelengths captured by MIRI. This view provides astronomers with a unique perspective on the galaxy's dust distribution and star formation activity, offering insights into the processes that shape and evolve galaxies like NGC 891.

WR 140 has been observed before by JWST on July 2022 (pic a). The craziest thing is, by comparing it to the updated image (pic b), you can actually see the dust rings getting farther away from the star, at almost 1% the speed of light. 🔭 🧪

GN-z11. This was the most distant galaxy, until JWST was launched. Now it's not even in the top 10. 🔭 🧪
A rectangular image with thousands of galaxies of various shapes and colours on the black background of space. Some are noticeably spirals, either face-on or edge-on, while others are blobby ellipticals. Many are too small to discern any structure. One prominent foreground star at top centre features Webb’s signature eight-point diffraction spikes. At lower right, a small region is highlighted with a white box. Vertical lines extend upward like a cone to the bottom corners of a larger box at upper right, showing a zoomed-in version of the highlighted area. The pullout features a galaxy labelled GN-z11, seen as a fuzzy yellow dot. Above it is another galaxy, seen as a fuzzy red oval.

NGC 346 side-by-side images: Hubble and Webb. 🔭 🧪
A side-by-side comparison of a Hubble image of the massive star cluster NGC 346 (left) versus a Webb image of the same cluster (right). The Hubble image shows the cluster in shades of blue against a black background punctuated by white stars of various sizes. Ethereal nebulosity, looking much like draped chiffon, dominates the image. The Webb view, in shades of pink and orange against a black background, is speckled with fewer stars than in the Hubble version. These stars are white and pink. Webb pierces through the cluster’s clouds to reveal more of its structure, which looks like twisted fibers.

The magnificent starburst galaxy Messier 82
This mosaic image of the magnificent starburst galaxy, Messier 82 (M82) is the sharpest wide-angle view ever obtained of M82. It is a galaxy remarkable for its webs of shredded clouds and flame-like plumes of glowing hydrogen blasting out from its central regions where young stars are being born 10 times faster than they are inside in our Milky Way Galaxy.

Flaming Star Nebula by Davide De Martin.
Rippling dust and gas lanes give the Flaming Star Nebula its name. The red and blue colors of the nebula are present in different regions and are created by different processes. The bright star AE Aurigae is so hot it is blue, emitting light so energetic it knocks electrons away from surrounding gas. When a proton recaptures an electron, red light is frequently emitted. The blue region's color is a mix of this red light and blue light emitted by AE Aurigae but reflected to us by surrounding dust. The two regions are referred to as emission nebula and reflection nebula, respectively. The Flaming Star Nebula, officially known as IC 405, lies about 1500 light years distant, spans about 5 light years, and is visible with a small telescope toward the constellation of Auriga. One and a half degree East from the Flaming Star Nebula is located IC 410, a region of faint nebulosity surrounding the open star cluster NGC 1893. The cluster itself is small and located just below center, underneath the central dust region of the nebula. This nebula contains complex wisps of gas and is a beautiful target for astrophotography. (Text adapted from Astronomy Picture of the Day). This image is a composite from black and white images taken with the Palomar Observatory's 48-inch (1.2-meter) Samuel Oschin Telescope as a part of the second National Geographic Palomar Observatory Sky Survey (POSS II). The images were recorded on two glass photographic plates - one sensitive to red light and the other to blue and later they were digitized. Credit: Caltech, Palomar Observatory, Digitized Sky Survey. In order to produce the color image seen here, I worked with a total of 56 different frames, 28 for each color band, coming from 4 different plates taken between 1988 and 1996. Original file is 11,144x9,801 pixels with a resolution of about 1 arcsec per pixel. The image show an area of sky large 3.1ø x 2.7ø (for comparison, the full-Moon is about 0.5ø in diameter).
