I talked with someone who works in book publishing, and they mentioned they get a lot of AI slop these days. I asked how they know what's human-written, and they said that there's one thing that will reveal AI slop without error, and that's the author not knowing their own creation.
A real author can talk about their story for hours. They love to elaborate every character, every twist, every detail. Because those existed in their head long before they ever made it to the paper. They were loved before they were written.
AI slop wasn't. It was just vomited into existence.
Someone who generates their story with AI will never bond with their story the way real writers do. That's why they may not know what to say when they're asked why did the character do this, or even remember the scene in the first place. It's something they read, not something they wrote. And to a writer, those are not the same.
There's a unique bond between the creator and the creation. If your writing doesn't come of you, you'll always lack that.
I keep hearing soon we won't be able to tell. And perhaps, in a superficial sense, that's true. But there is a difference. It's not em dashes or repeated words. It's whether the story was made by someone who loves it and cares about it.
If the writer's eyes light up when asked why did the character do that? and they start their very own Ted Talk about that specific scene...
then it's real.

Sorry about the silence. Been trying to work on a ton of products and new boxes in the background. Feeling burnt, I decided to take a bit of time to work on something for me and started modeling the lamp my d&d character, Alphyrim, uses. Still a ways to go, but happy with the main body so far.

Day late and dollar short, but the person this is for I wasn't able to see until today anyway. Finished this last night for a friend who lost his drawing pad and I am quite proud of how it came out. For my first hardcover book, there are pleanty of places I can improve, but I think it came out good.

Been thinking on the use of GenAi for mood boards. Ethics and legal risks aside, I truly believe using GenAi as references deprives one of many pivotal things. Here’s a blurb on what I mean:

Some thoughts:
When using GenAi as a mood board you don't get sources. This means you deprive yourself from knowledge.
You generated a location? You deprived yourself of knowing more about the interesting parts of the world and why things came to be.
Generate an armor or costume? You deprived yourself on real world techniques, function, form and history.
You generated art inspirations? You deprive yourself of learning about artists from history or lock out living ones from potentially being hired.
Ethical issues of using GenAi models aside, one ends up making visuals mood boards devoid of reality and history. With it one deprives themselves from learning about our world and who is living in it, inadvertently making your work weaker, because of how detached it is from our shared human reality and history.

I’m in the process of remaking some of my table displays! More details in the alt text. These need to be resilient, lightweight, & impact-resistant since I’ll ideally be traveling with them for years, which presents an interesting set of problems to solve without machinery.

This project consists of 4 (2 large, 2 small) arch shapes cut out of corrugated plastic and layered with their grains crossed for stability. They are in the process of being given borders, made of strips of the flexible coroplast hot glued and packing-taped into position.

all 4 arches with their borders. The coroplast has some gaps visible and the edges of the border strips are open.

The same arches, now with their gaps and edges painstakingly filled in with a first pass of foam clay.

A close-up on the edges of the arch border. They have all been filled in with foamclay and the full surface of the boards has been given a first-pass sanding.
