as defined in the resolution, Zionism is support of "an ethnonationalist Jewish state". That's racism. 🤷 If people are sad because cutting off all of their Zionist acquaintances would leave them isolated then they should probably reflect on that.

webrarian is a new R package. It turns a folder of R scripts and data into a static website where R runs in the visitor's browser, with no compute server and nothing to install. blog.thecoatlessprofessor.com/posts/introd... #rstats #webr #webassembly
A card for the R package webrarian. Large text reads "A folder in. A website out." On the left, a small card lists a folder named lab-01 holding lab.R, setup.R and a data folder. A red arrow points from it to a browser window that shows a scatterplot of car weight against miles per gallon with brick-red points. The address coatless-wasm.github.io/webrarian is on the card.

I don’t think I’m the only person who will appreciate this
Triangular diagram labelled The Introvert
Hierarchy of Needs.

Top: Self-actualisation - A completely empty house. An arrow pointing to the house says “Nobody needs anything. Nobody is coming home for hours. Phone on silent.”

The next level is Esteem - Plans getting cancelled. An arrow here says “‘Sorry, we're going to have to rearrange.’ Oh no. That's terrible. I'm devastated.”

Next level: Belonging - One person you actually like. No group chat. No networking. No "let's go round and introduce ourselves." Just one person you can talk absolute shit with.

Fourth level: Safety - An escape route. Own car. End seat. Knowing exactly when the event finishes. A believable reason to leave early.

Bottom of pyramid: Physiological needs - Being left the fuck alone for a bit. Food. Water. Sleep. 45 minutes where nobody speaks to you.

So yeah, elision! It's stylometric GOLD. Just one example, the Consolatio Liviae was considered a genuine work until last century (the language is a GREAT match), but as soon as people did stats on the elisions it was instantly busted, and now everybody agrees it's not Ovid. ELISIONNN! 🫳🎤

Ben Nagy @rantyben.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Another stylistic component is *which* elisions are made. Literary scholars have a lot of intuition here but again, I don't think it has been operationalized. Here are the top 20 syllable combinations in Ovid vs Vergil - you can instantly see eg that Vergil is way more willing to elide through 'm'
130
Ben Nagy @rantyben.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
These positional preferences are stylistic information! For example, here's Ovid's hexameter elisions compared to Vergil. Check out the 'normal' positions and also the use of prodelision... I haven't (yet) started fully mining this sort of style, idk if anyone has computationally...

...this is from lines like this where 'satumque iterum' would, if joined, eliminate the 3rd foot strong caesura. Instead (just trust me I have a lot of evidence) the /kw/ sound goes forward onto 'iterum' and the word is still considered to break after 'satum'.

A few things - he hates elision in the back half of the pentameter (well known). He also doesn't much like it in the middle of the line, but he *loves* strengthening a strong caesura with prodelision, and ditto finishing a pentameter that way. You can also see -que elisions concentrated at 11...
110
Ben Nagy @rantyben.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
...but this is all old news. Let's look at new stuff. Here are all Ovid's elisions for hexameter and pentameter lines, plotted by where they occur (dashed lines are when no syllable can start in that position because there is a mandatory longum starting the position before)
120
Ben Nagy @rantyben.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
In almost my first ever paper, I showed that pure elision count is the best single metrical feature to distinguish authors. Ovid, for example, is well known to have one of the lowest rates of elision. Here are his stats broken down by work. He may not like elision, but he's a fiend for prodelision!
A table, "Elisions by work in Ovid" showing the percentages in hexameter and pentameter lines

Ben Nagy @rantyben.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Despite what you may have been taught, there are actually three kinds of elision in classical Latin. "Normal" elision 'puell[a] amat', prodelision "puella [e]st" and the elision of the enclitic -que "puellaqu[e] amata". -que is a special child metrically bc elision of que does NOT prevent a caesura.

It's been a long time, I shouldn't have left you without a Latin verse rant to scroll through... Last couple of days I have been digging a bit more deeply into Ovid's style of ELISION. 🧵

I think I get it, but if the tree has enough leaves for all these multiplication then I was saying it seems to me like back to 'universals' where every utterance has to be reachable. BUT I am not a very good linguist, this is not an argument from confidence :)

this is a great thread and you should read it because I am not dunking. My one quibble is it's hard for me as a 'linguist' to fit reasoning models into 'pure syntax machines' without blowing out "syntax" to stupid Chomskian dimensions. Current LLMs multiply bc they know long multiplication.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.
