Indeed! For a while I was exclusively powered by rage and spite - and now I’m working on cultivating new habits! And also, yes. My new environment is exceptionally good - even in its flaws!

For good or ill, the primary way society currently creates value is through business & by coming together in organizations. Scholars have a responsibility to understand the what, how, and why of people and organizations & people in organizations for the good of the world. We must do better. 7/7

We already know how fraud can be mitigated & prevented. We know the system is broken. We know current incentives yield incremental, unimaginative, and unreproducible findings. Can we finally make systemic changes? Will we continue to lionize the few & privileged - unscrutinized for decades? 6/7

As of right now, it is unclear if the fraud is limited to 4 papers or if it spans Gino’s entire scholarship (which has close to 33,000 citations according to Google Scholar). Regardless, a day of reckoning has arrived for organizational behavior and management as a field: 5/7

All of us interact with organizations. Their policies/priorities impact us directly & indirectly in small & profound ways. Dishonesty research is meant to help people in organizations make ethical decisions, which can ideally lead to ethical organizations. Fraud harms this process for us all. 3/7

Broadly, Francesca Gino studies decision-making in organizations. Some of her research is on dishonesty. Her work has led to awards, books, a TED talk, & A LOT of press coverage. Many people know about her findings but they are unlikely to learn about the fraud. This is bad for us all. 2/7

It has been a rough day. It’s easy to give into despair and feel defeated. And it’s in these moments when I need joy the most. My smallest act of defiance is to gift myself a moment to lose myself to joy. Nothing helps me more than music. This piece, to me, feels like happiness persevering!

The great joy/curse that humankind granted itself is our ability to see historical context. We can conceptualize the distant past and predict the far future. We can see that we are on a spinning planet in constant turmoil. It is a source of cosmic bliss, but it also drives us completely nuts

The human spirit can be incredibly resilient. We can create joy and awe in moments of terror and pain. So many moments like that in early pandemic: places where we stepped up and surprised each other. Places where we let each other down, too. Trying to remember this in this phase of COVID too.
