This fountain has a statue of a cherub holding a fish; a trickle of chalky water comes out of the fish's mouth. The passing decades have almost hidden the statue under a cloak of tufa (limescale) and moss. The owners like it mossy but I was allowed a sample to ID. #moss #bryophytes

202 years ago today, this stork was shot in the village of Klütz in northern Germany. It already had a 30-inch arrow in its neck. The arrow was made of African wood, and this first ‘Pfeilstorch’ (‘arrow stork’) played a pivotal role in the understanding of bird migration.

A stuffed stork with an arrow through its neck – it’s that very stork, now found in the zoological collection at the University of Rostock.
