for all the handwringing about city council drama i don’t think this gets emphasized nearly enough
“Our City Council now, for better or worse, is more representative of Portland,” Valdini said. “It doesn’t always make things easier when a lot of different voices are heard in government.”

“But now you have a City Council that is divided and represents the divisions in Portland. I see this as a success story.”

“For too long, Portland’s small businesses and working people have been asked to carry more while mega-corporations benefit from the services, infrastructure, and workforce our city provides,” Morillo said in a press release Wednesday.
Additionally, small local businesses would see a reduction in taxes under the proposal by raising the amount a small business can make without paying the tax from $75,000 in sales to $500,000 annually.
The cosponsors of the ordinance say that would zero out taxes for 18,000 local businesses with an average savings of $900 per year.

They tiptoe right up to the line alleging campaign finance violations but acknowledge there are none. Later they call out spending on “Don’t Rank Rene” flyers. Never mind that Rene was actually penalized for actual campaign finance violations. (Yes I know penalties were reversed—the merits were not)

Reading this breathless conspiracy-minded email from the reactionary Partnership for Portland, whispering “Hell yeah”
Detailing the results of progressive spending around the last city council election cycle, the email concludes:
‘Across the committees in this network, ORESTAR shows more than $2 million raised since 2022 (after netting out transfers between them), much of it originating from 501(c)(4)
organizations whose donors are never disclosed, and a meaningful share from a 501(c)(3) charity.
The outcomes:
• A new charter with a 25%-plus-one threshold to win a council seat
• Seven endorsed city councilors elected in the first election under those rules
• A rival mayoral candidate driven to third place
• Post-election maximum contributions to the six-member "Peacock" bloc
And they are reloading’

What did the North Peninsula Review print? “What the market needs is government financing that does not increase costs”—a quote from the owner about what he thinks the public should do for him. Because his needs are the center of the universe for both the paper and himself. Not the community’s. /end

I just wish a reporter would ask and an editor would print the reasons why. What would you rather that money get spent on? How much less would you make on the deal? Or even bolder: why is it more important for you to make $N more instead of X workers being employed for Y months? 2/

Local news article says it is “out of the question” for property owner to seek Oregon public financing for a housing development, because “union pay scales… would increase construction costs 20% to 30%”. I can guess why higher costs makes it “out of the question”—less money for the owner. But! 1/

Tomorrow, the City Council is set to vote on the Moda Center term sheet. Before the vote, we should think about these questions: Why did council reject all amendments for transparency last week? How can this current term sheet be enough if we do not know where the first $120 million comes from?
