I know people feel raw about this and I do understand. I’d have voted for a workable bill. But having spoken on a number of occasions on palliative care and social care it’s pretty galling to be accused of bad faith

When disabled people oppose Assisted Dying, it’s almost never from a religious point of view. It’s not because we’re anti-choice or that we want to force people to suffer. We oppose it because society devalues disabled lives and uses these programs in an unethical manner. They become eugenics. 🧵

Today I will turn on the Lords to hear the moment the assisted dying runs out of time with a profound sense of relief, and thankfulness that so many Lords and MPs put the interests of disabled and vulnerable people over individualism, and refused to rubberstamp a law full of holes

This the key point. If FCDO did overturn the vetting without telling anyone it was because it had already been announced. Which was a ridiculous thing to do.

If you step back, it is truly extraordinary that so many people went to such great lengths and broke so many conventions and risked their political careers and the only outcome of all these efforts and risks was appointing a washed-up old spinner to an ambassadorial post

The actions of Lib Dem and Tory peers in the Lords have prevented the Chagos Bill, a govt Bill, from gaining Royal Assent This is far punchier than what has been done to the Assisted Dying Bill Yet there are no calls for constitutional change based on the Chagos Bill

It was a terrible bill, Lord's did what a second chamber should do when the commons fail to debate complex issues such as coercion, and disabled groups warning of how future governments may not fund accommodations which enable a quality of life instead pushing the vulnerable towards euthanasia.

MPs were essentially told "don't worry, the Lords can sort out the details and make sure it works" and then it was treated like an outrage when Lords started scrutinising the details (some sincerely, some as spoiler). The whole process was badly rushed and it just created bad faith all round.

The assisted dying bill is a *terrible* reason to reform the Lords (something there are plenty of good arguments to do). It was a backbench bill! Lords were under no obligation to support it. Plenty of people suggested a backbench bill was a bad way to pass assisted dying *for this very reason*.

60-40% in the Commons PLP, 15-85% in the Scottish PLP - this is the definition of divisive inside the Labour Party Let’s just get on with delivering our manifesto rather than returning to this yet again

So, the Lords would have needed about 22 days of Committee stage. That's actually not far off what it would have been allocated had it been a govt Bill And if it were and things were going at current pace no one would shout fillibuster

Starmer is firing the most senior civil servant, just as he was about to embark on overseeing compliance with the humble address requiring disclosure of lots of No 10 documents. If a Tory govt had done that we would be drowning in "we are on threshold of fascism" articles

This is increasingly unhinged. The Cabinet Secretary post has become a shortlived political appointment. It is supposed to be the single continuity on which the entire UK government machinery rests. Not saying Wormald is blameless. But if there is this much blame, there's a certain PM needing to go.

“I advised the prime minister to make that appointment and I take full responsibiiity for that advice” The inevitably question for Number 10 now is why the advice is a resigning matter but the actual decision isn’t. That’s a hard question to answer.

Not to overanalyse, but this pattern: send out ministers to defend bad decision in the morning media round, walk back bad decision in the afternoon is what ultimately killed Johnson's administration.

Both Erskine May and the PBL Guide to Making Legislation are clear about that a PMB which needs even just a single amendment in the Lords (Falconer has tabled several) will almost certainly not make it to RA If you can't get a square through a round hole, it's not the hole's fault!

The accusation that the Lords are “obstructing democracy” by supporters of the assisted dying bill is a ridiculous one that shows up the flaws in this process that have been there from the very beginning – which have repeatedly been covered up by heated rhetoric (1/?)
