A brilliant milestone for the Lowry and another sign of the strength of Salford’s cultural and visitor economy. More than one million people have passed through the Lowry’s doors over the past year, with hundreds of thousands enjoying performances, exhibitions and the L.S. Lowry collection. 1/2

I’m pleased that Salford will receive £222,000 through the Labour government’s new Good Food Neighbourhoods programme. The funding will give local people and Salford City Council the flexibility to improve access to affordable, healthy food.

Water is essential to life, and it should be run in the public interest. I welcome the Prime Minister’s announcement on removing restrictions on public ownership of water company shares, giving mayors more power to hold water companies to account, and tightening the rules on executive bonuses. 1/2

I’m pleased that Andy Burnham has committed to building a National Care Service, with free personal care for older people. It is a significant step towards treating care as a right, just as we do healthcare. People who need care, their families and the workers who provide it deserve nothing less.

Too many people in Salford have found that owning a home comes with hidden charges they never expected, and I’m pleased Labour is taking further action. It's a good start. People deserve fair charges, proper accountability and more control over their homes.

I’ve long argued that our energy networks should serve the public. Plans for a publicly owned Great British Grid is a welcome step towards bringing more of our energy system under public ownership, and the focus now must be on making sure people see the benefit in their bills.

🏠 More homes kept social. Earlier help to prevent homelessness. For Salford, that means strengthening work already happening locally while giving our council more tools to help prevent homelessness and keep much-needed homes in the social housing sector.
NEW SOCIAL HOUSING BILL MEASURES WILL:” over a red-tinted image of housing. Four measures are listed with tick icons: keeping more social homes by giving councils more opportunity to buy homes before they leave the social housing sector; helping prevent homelessness through stronger partnership working and earlier intervention; improving access to housing by giving councils new powers to refer homeless households to housing associations; and £39 billion for new social and affordable housing over ten years. 🎓 Learning at work should be open to everyone. The government has announced £15 million a year to restore the Union Learning Fund, helping working people gain new skills, progress in their careers and prepare for changes in the workplace. 👇
UNION LEARNING FUND RESTORED” over a red-tinted photo of workers in an industrial setting. Text explains that the Union Learning Fund is being restored to help working people gain new skills and progress in their careers. It says the previous fund generated 180,000 learning opportunities each year, that people do not need to be union members to benefit, and that support will range from English, maths and digital skills to training for new and growing industries. It also highlights new investment to expand local apprenticeship support in Greater Manchester. Rebecca Long Bailey MP branding appears at the bottom with the words “Putting Salford first.

Council housing works. Salford has proved it, building hundreds of new council homes despite years of austerity. Now let's give Councils the powers and funding to build at scale. Genuinely affordable social rent, with homes kept in public hands for generations. www.facebook.com/reel/2693010...

On World Suicide Prevention Day, I’m proud to support the Samaritans and the Premier League #TogetherAgainstSuicide campaign. Suicide is preventable. A conversation, a check-in or simply listening can make a difference. No one should have to face a crisis alone.

In Parliament, I raised serious concerns with the Justice Secretary about understaffing, under-resourcing, violence and overcrowding in our prisons. More prison places alone won’t solve the crisis. We must invest in the staff and resources needed to keep our prisons safe.

This latest intervention from the CQC is deeply concerning and reinforces the serious issues that have already been raised about patient safety, governance and the way concerns are handled. Read the article here: www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home... And my quote in full here:
This latest intervention from the CQC is deeply concerning and reinforces the serious issues that have already been raised about patient safety, governance and the way concerns are handled across the Northern Care Alliance.

Patients, families and staff need to see clear evidence that lessons are being learned and that meaningful change is taking place. I have been raising concerns about the Trust for some time, and I will continue pressing both the NCA and the Government for transparency, accountability and the improvements that patients and staff deserve.

Thank you to Salford resident Maria Flaherty for sharing this lovely poem about Langworthy Road in the 1950s. It paints a vivid picture of its shops, characters and everyday life, and of the community spirit that still defines our wonderful city today. 🩷
Black-and-white graphic featuring a faded photograph of Langworthy Road, with Salford landmarks illustrated along the bottom. Text reads: “Langworthy Road, by Maria Flaherty. Up and down the high street, there’s a steady flow of mams. Some tucking hair in head scarves, some propelling Coach built prams. Past the shop front windows and machines dispensing cigs, dogs without their owners, loose but licensed, seven n six. Produce out on pavements, all laid out in layered crates. The punters pick by prodding no such thing as sell-by date.”Continuation of the poem over the same faded photograph of Langworthy Road, with Salford landmarks illustrated along the bottom. Text reads: “The independent bakers, make from scratch with their supplies. From bee sting cakes to almond buns, from puds to beltin’ pies. Great Britain, nineteen-fifties ruddy rations hanging round. Ted the butcher did his best to serve his dear old town. Testing times for many, men’s suits pawned and then bought back. Needed at the racecourse, for November’s Handicap. Pipe smoking still a pastime to tobacconists’ delight. The coils of Extra Thick Twist, finely cut and stuffed in tight.”Final part of the poem over the same faded photograph of Langworthy Road, with Salford landmarks illustrated along the bottom. Text reads: “The young-uns running errands carting batteries to the store. Heavy things with handles for the wireless on death’s door. In a waste-not-want-not culture, wallpaper offcuts going cheap. Made into children’s art books for the start of school next week. So many stop to chin wag or to whinge about the weather. The high street served the locals’ needs and brought them all together.”
