I do not shame anyone who's still on Substack and I am still impatient with Patreon's newsletter features but here's a good reminder of why so many of us are putting up with the various difficulties of *not* using Substack www.theguardian.com/media/2026/f...

Someone should make a website where the people who had to get a hotel this week could input their hotel occupancy taxes and request a refund of the 1% tax back from the Titans. As we all know, residents aren’t paying that right?

During the Arab Spring, I used to say to my online friends who were being subjected to state domestic terrorism in foreign countries, “Wishing you safety if possible and courage if not.” I now wish the same for the people in Minnesota.

smarter people than me will have much more profound things to say in the days to come about the arc from 2008 (Obama constantly having to deny accusations that he was a Muslim socialist) to 2025 (electing an actual Muslim socialist who doesn't apologize for it), but it feels like it means something

If you wanna reduce every mass shooting to the demographics of the perpetrator then know that over 98% are carried out by white men. Don’t talk about trans or anything else. If you wanna get into identity games then take the guns from the white guys.

Angus & I stopped by Plaza Mariachi tonight (a springtime Friday night with beautiful weather). I needed to buy some jicama at the mercado but it was closed up early. The whole place was ghost town-ish. Nearby taquerias & taco trucks had maybe one or two people there. It was eerie & heartbreaking. 🦞

Substack is going to keep on substacking unless writers move their newsletters elsewhere and we as readers stop reading people’s substack newsletters. We all have a part to play in taking this fucking platform down and making sure independent journalism stops being laundered through a nazi bar.
