Housing people is the cheapest solution. When we try anything else, we are spending money to punish people.

It wasn't done in a lab, but the issue was they optimized for the reddest apples possible, which also selected for mushier apples. The old red Delicious varieties often ripened yellow or a faded red instead of the bright red, and those didn't sell as well.

Out of curiosity, any reason this isn't marked as solved yet? It says 'solved' in the comments, but the photo itself isn't.

There you go - it's exactly the breakdown you'd expect.
Hire 350 more police officers, firefighters, and paramedics

Hire 200 more police officers, equip the police service with body cameras, and ensure safety in communities across Ottawa. Hire 100 more paramedics and 50 more firefighters to increase service and reduce response times.

I have CHECKED WHEN DEPLANING if Line 4 is running, everything is green, and I go to take the train and the next one is in 22 minutes because they just randomly cut service with zero notice. One time even after waiting, the time sailed right by and it was another 20 before a train showed.
120
Matt @rafuse.dev · 18/09/2026
It's genuinely wild how it often feels (especially with line 4) that it is being administered by deeply uncaring people. OC Transpo simply does not care about Line 4 even if it's the first experience someone has of their service when visiting. Not even an afterthought.

I have for years voted against establishing an arbitrary tax cap that doesn't account for what the city actually needs. When I'm Mayor, we'll build a budget process that works for the residents of Ottawa.

I've known @maxfawcett.bsky.social for many years and admired his work and sometimes worried a bit about his willingness to pick fights with randos on the internet, so I'm startled to learn that it's his mildly colloquial use of the term "mandate" that has seemingly all of US Bluesky in a tizzy

This was our third minority government in a row! Two of them I found direct references to the term mandate and I barely looked.

AFAIK Schumer and Jeffries have both specifically dodged committing to impeaching trump and it takes a supermajority (which even if the Dems sweep all tossup seats in the midterms is out of reach) to remove them anyway.

The decision to quibble over dictionary definitions rather than address Canadians' fear that the American political system is fundamentally antagonistic towards us sure seems like exactly the point Max made about any real desire for fundamental change by the US towards the Canadian relationship.

Sure, but that requires a muscular Democratic party I don't see yet. It's heartening seeing signs like Harris endorsing court packing, but it's Joe Representative in a D +1 seat that ultimately decides, not to mention the state governments. It's also just a lot to do in four years.

There's a bunch of structural problems that make it harder for the US to bounce back though, is the problem. Hungary proves there's absolutely a way to step back from the brink, but US institutions are going to be brutally difficult to overhaul to get there, and the dem leadership is... well.

I felt like I was sniffing glue, so just out of curiosity I looked up how mandate is used in Canadian media. It doesn't imply a blowout - just that they won (see below, for example). And Trump won by more the second time. From our point of view, this is all factually correct.

Adding to this, I think it's totally reasonable to have natural gas backups for solar/wind regardless! We need to be prepared for those days, but it doesn't need to be in regular sustained use.
100
Matt @rafuse.dev · 16/09/2026
But yes, Nuclear isn't cheap - solar (even with BESS) is gonna net you a lower cost per KWh. Nuclear still has its place, to be sure - baseload power is great to have. But I'm skeptical large-scale nuclear is worth it with how much progress we're seeing in solar.
000
Matt @rafuse.dev · 16/09/2026
This is wrong. Pickering B was approved at $26.8 billion. Darlington's total cost (adjusted for inflation) was $27.6 billion. Of course, with literally any overages (even 2-3%) it'll cost more, but "much more" is hyperbole. Of course it's less generation capacity - it's maintenance.

Matt @rafuse.dev · 16/09/2026
(and to be clear, I'm at best neutral on Nuclear. I think solid and grid-level battery storage is gonna make it moot, but Canada really is pretty good at building unclear plants)

Pickering B, which started construction only about a decade before, came in under budget relative to inflation. It's no coincidence the slightly earlier project, not hampered by political controversy and an adverse bond market, was delivered on time and under budget.
200
Matt @rafuse.dev · 16/09/2026
Darlington's issues weren't really driven by nuclear specifically but more OPG's massive overestimation of energy demand and increased borrowing costs in the 80s. Most of the overruns were from debt that couldn't be paid back until generation began, which was hampered by stop/start construction.
210
Matt @rafuse.dev · 15/09/2026
OPG built Pickering B and completed it under budget though, accounting for inflation. Pickering A was under 10% over budget. Canada knows how to do nuclear, and generalizing to the entire nuclear power industry across a vast array of regulatory regimes doesn't make sense.
000
Matt @rafuse.dev · 15/09/2026
Sure, but OPG has a record of building reactors under budget too. Pickering B completed significantly under budget, if you account for inflation.

Matt @rafuse.dev · 15/09/2026
