This image shows a close-up of a hoverfly in mid-flight, positioned near a delicate, bell-shaped yellow-green flower. The hoverfly has a distinctive striped orange and black abdomen, large reddish-brown compound eyes, and translucent wings that are blurred from rapid movement. The background is softly blurred in shades of green and yellow, giving the photograph a dreamy, natural atmosphere. The composition highlights the hoverfly’s sharp details against the smooth bokeh, emphasising its elegance and motion as it hovers toward the flower.

A NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera) image of the dark cloud Lynds 483, highlighting a powerful bipolar jet. The jet is brightly illuminated with a mix of red, green, and blue hues, indicating different ionized gases and dust. It extends vertically from a bright, star-forming region at the bottom, against a backdrop of numerous faint stars. The image showcases the detailed structure and complex emissions within the cloud.

NGC 1514 (MIRI image). M. Hakan Özsaraç Science NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI www.flickr.com/photos/mhozs...
This mid-infrared image from MIRI showcases the planetary nebula NGC 1514, often called Crystal Ball Nebula. It appears as a roughly spherical, glowing cloud with a complex structure. The nebula exhibits a range of colors, from a bright white outer shell to a mottled interior of red, pink, and blue hues, suggesting varying temperatures and compositions of the ejected stellar material. A bright central star is visible at the nebula's core, surrounded by a faint, star-like halo. The dark background is sprinkled with a few distant stars, while the bottom right corner of the image includes text stating "Processing M. Hakan Özsaraç Science NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI".

The same side of the Moon always faces Earth, but not in exactly the same way. Due to its tilted axis and elliptical orbit we see about 59% of its surface over time. This simulation compresses a year into 60 seconds, making the Moon's apparent wobble, called libration, clearly visible. Credit: NASA

Deep View of the Tarantula Region with Light Echoes from SN1987a - Narrowband Bicolour - From Rolf Wahl Olsen - flic.kr/p/2mm7Jym
This image shows what I believe is the first amateur detection of light echoes from SN1987a - 33 years after the event.
The light echoes are produced when the initial flash from SN1987a is subsequently reflected off interstellar dust as light travels outward from the event. Direct light from the supernova was observed on Earth in 1987, and we then see light reflected from dust in the interstellar space arriving later because it has travelled further to reach us.

The detection of light echoes was created by subtracting two Luminance images taken almost 8 years apart, on 24th Oct 2012 and 21st Sep 2020 respectively, in order to create a difference image which was then superimposed on a regular colour image of the area. The expanding light echoes appear as roughly circular concentric arcs, centered on SN1987a's location.

The image is a mosaic of two deep fields centered near the bright Tarantula Nebula (NGC 2070) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The field is filled with numerous bright colourful nebulae and star clusters (an annotated version is available here). At the LMCs distance of approximately 160,000 light years, the field of view seen here spans a massive 2850 x 1950 light years!
At this large scale the nebulosity seem to feature many bubble shaped voids of different sizes. These are formed by the radiation pressure from young star forming regions and shockwaves from ancient supernovae. The small but comparatively recent supernova remnant of SN1987a is also vis...

This is a mosaic image of the OMC2-NW region taken by the James Webb Space Telescope's NIRCam instrument. The image is rectangular and shows a complex tapestry of interstellar gas and dust clouds. The clouds display a variety of colors, including deep greens, warm golds, rich purples, and earthy browns, creating a swirling, textured effect. Numerous bright stars are scattered throughout the image, some exhibiting the characteristic eight-pointed diffraction spikes of Webb's optics. The background is a deep, dark space.
