Today was our final day of field work with water management students from @hsmagdeburgstendal.bsky.social in the #Harz mountains. After yesterday's success we were able to complete the species list of the native #fish fauna in our study brook today: A beautiful young brown trout and a bullhead.

Ein junger Hecht versteckt sich unter Wasserpflanzen: Vielfältige und gut vernetzte Lebensräume in den Flussauen sind unerlässlich, um stabile Fischbestände und eine hohe Artenvielfalt zu erhalten oder wiederherzustellen. Das ist das Ergebnis einer Studie von Forschenden der niederländischen Universität Wageningen und des Leibniz-Instituts für Gewässerökologie und Binnenfischerei (IGB). Sie untersuchten, welche Lebensräume der Fischnachwuchs am Niederrhein nutzt. Dazu werteten sie eine dreijährige Datenreihe von mehr als 1,4 Millionen Fischlarven und Jungfischen in 18 renaturierten Auen aus. Mehr als 60 Prozent der Fischarten wechselten während ihrer Entwicklung zwischen fünf verschiedenen Lebensraumtypen, die im Fluss und in der Aue eigentlich zur Verfügung stehen sollten – jedoch haben menschliche Eingriffe die europäischen Flusslandschaften drastisch verändert und vereinheitlicht. Die positive „Unordnung“ und Vielfalt sollte daher in den Aufwuchsgebieten wiederhergestellt werden, urteilen die Forscherinnen und Forscher.
