Hi all, I've revived my BlueSky account to share info about our ecological monitoring survey (more below). I don't have many followers, but I'm hoping our survey could be really useful for the UK monitoring community. So please pass on to anyone that might find it interesting! arcg.is/1mn48e5

By extension, you can concoct a method for constrained NMDS. It's lived in my head for a while, but now there's some code for it too github.com/jarioksa/nat....

For the record, this is how NMDS works. You choose a dissimilarity, and NMDS estimates the ordination scores in a chosen coordinate system (for vegan this is euclidean).

Your question seems to be predicated on the idea that dissimilarity indices are ecologically meaningful :-) The distances will be in Euclidean space, so we won’t need other indices. The ecological interpretation should be as good/bad as any other JSDM/GLLVM.

Same richness, but different composition. That's the point of a multi-species model: richness and composition are connected, and should be analysed as such. Come to my ##NSOGFÖ2026 workshop next week if you want to learn how to do this with #gllvm! nordicsocietyoikos.glueup.com/event/joint-...

Can vegetation science -please- stop doing regressions of community derived metrics? These kinds of analyses suffer from all kinds of problems, from violation of independence to assuming species respond the same way to the environment, and more.

Few statisticians know that Frank Yates, pioneer of experimental design, is responsible for the annoying practice of indicating 3 tiers of statistical significance by stars (*p ≤ 0.05, **p ≤0.01, ***p ≤ 0.001). He soon regretted it and “vehemently opposed its unthinking use”. And here we are.

I was told that my lunchtime workshop at #NSO2026 #NSO on predicting species richness from model-based ordination was sold out (which has not happened to me before). The organisation was kind enough to increase the number of participants, so it should be available again during registration. #gllvm

It hit me that we can con gllvm into facilitating gllvm::glmmVA with mixed response types, in a way that is akin to how to handle these things with INLA (look @bobohara.bsky.social, putting your wisdom to work!), which I think allows you to fit the random effect structure below?

I've had quite a few review requests on ordination come in lately; three this week alone. I decline not because I don't want to review, I actually do. I always feel guilty turning down perfectly reasonable requests. Except the ones that misspell my name. Reviewer 2 can deal with those.
