Schools will never have restorative cultures until they apologize for the harm done to students by the institution of schooling. And that will never happen because too many adults refuse to see the harm and would refuse to acknowledge the need to apologize.

It's very easy to wear a suit and tie in any major city, even if the aesthetic has mostly disappeared from daily life, because there are people outside wearing pink tutus with Army boots. As usual, your liberation is connected to other people's liberation.
Bobby Mars on Twitter writes: "If you wear a collared shirt and nice shoes out to the bar in the rust belt, multiple people will ask you if you just came from a wedding. Aesthetic standards for men’s attire are horrendously low"

It’s the natural conclusion that follows from the mechanistic, cog.sci. version of “highly effective teaching”. If there is one (or a few) best practices, then all we need is to do those. And if they don’t work, the children are the issue, not the practices.

The main offerings at Alpha School are the impactful experiences Hendrick would argue are not scalable, and others in the science of learning advocacy crowd would argue don’t work and can’t work to help kids learn at all.
What’s remarkable is how Alpha School doesn’t lead with anything Hendrick so powerfully defends. While Hendrick uses the phrases throughout his case for Alpha School, there are no mentions of ‘science of learning,’ ‘learning science,’ ‘evidence-based,’ ‘research-based,’ or ‘cognitive science’ on Alpha’s homepage, program descriptions, or admissions pages.

Without sociology, what toolkit do you have for claims that fall within that domain, *especially* when those claims are about the values we embed in formal education, policy, and school as an institution? pamelasnow.blogspot.com/2026/08/edu-...
Science is never completely settled, but it is settled-enough on reading instruction for us to take action at scale, using public health prevention principles. However, knowledge translation is blocked by the “but, but, but” rhetoric of (for example) “every child is different”, “there’s still unanswered questions”, “there’s a range of ways of teaching a child to read” etc - so this favours a paralysis and inertia of indecision over drawing decisive lines in the sand, as we see in other disciplines like medicine, with clinical care pathways that create accountability guardrails without removing practitioner judgement, and iterative review as the evidence evolves.

Education academics whose work is embedded in postmodern sociology are focused on rhetorical activism, not on the basic scientific foundation of falsifiability. Findings they don’t like are cast into the moral wilderness with slurs like “positivism” or “neoliberal” - no more discussion needed. This is not academic rigour.

The NAACP is urging Black athletes and fans to “withhold athletic and financial support” from public universities in states that “have moved to limit, weaken or erase Black voting representation”
NAACP Calls on Black Athletes & Fans to Withhold Athletic and Financial Support of Public Schools in States Attacking Black Voting Rights

The NAACP today is launching the “Out of Bounds” campaign, a national call for Black athletes, families, fans, alumni, and consumers to withhold athletic and financial support from public universities in states that have moved to limit, weaken, or erase Black voting representation in the wake of the Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling in Louisiana v. Callais, which gutted what was left of the Voting Rights Act The NAACP identified eight priority states — Tennessee, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, and Georgia — and targeted flagship public athletic programs generating more than $100 million in annual revenue that continue to recruit Black athletes while their state governments dismantle the political power of Black communities. What these states have done is not a policy disagreement. It is a sprint to erase Black political power,” said Derrick Johnson, National President & CEO, NAACP. “These actions happened in days, in some cases in hours, of a Supreme Court ruling that gives extremist lawmakers a playbook to erode Black representation. The NAACP will not watch the same institutions that depend on Black athletic prowess to fill their stadiums and their bank accounts remain silent while their states strip Black communities of their voice. Out of Bounds is our answer: we are naming the contradiction, and we are calling on Black athletes, families, fans, and consumers to act on it. The same power that built these programs can be redirected. And it will be.”

The economic stakes of the campaign are significant. The flagship universities in the eight targeted states collectively generate billions of dollars in annual athletic revenue.

It's actually remarkable the extent to which we're propagandized to perceive the performance of war as free of cost while counting pennies for everything else. A single tomahawk missile costs $3M and we used nearly one thousand of them in the first month of strikes on Iran.

If you can say reading scores in one domain go up as a result of this intervention, and that's all that matters, then the other stuff doesn't even count. Reading scores are a separate outcome from the aim of having a popularly literate society.

Let's be clear, designing K-3 instruction around passing a reading test to determine 3rd grade retention is entirely different from designing school around the belief that literacy is active, enriching, and necessary. Are kids living literacy or just performing parts of it for the test?
