okay, then. I disagree with you on all counts. As I said, there is no control over headlines in any press interaction, and you very well know that. And you explictly supported your colleague in calling us EA cultists and making fun of the conference this was published in. Nothing else to add.

And just want to point the power dynamics at play here — you as a senior colleague are implying ppl like me as bad faith actors, your colleagues call us as EA cultists, and call COLM, a top tier ML venue as venue for propoganda papers. appreciate the criticism still but we r logging off.

My final post before I am off social media: we had no control over the headline and it is the headline that is mainly misrepresenting our work. Me saying this effect emerged after 10 minutes never implied AI makes you dumb after 10 minutes. thats insane and why wld we do that?

Rachit Dubey @rachitdubey.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
saying this emerges after 10 minutes is not implying 10 minutes of AI use makes you dumb permanently! I dont know what else to say here.. we wont be making more posts about this work in the future. Productive discourse over emails is welcome, not personal attacks.

that said, this is a 10 min study, eventually ppl will start getting better again after the tool is removed and they are given an opportunity to practice. So it is not a permanent effect at all. We will update our paper discussion to note this more explictly

regarding time series — in our pilots, we just had 1 test problem and had stronger effects and were worried abt this, hence we added 3 in the test phase.

Rachit Dubey @rachitdubey.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
i agree with it; we tried our best to control for confounds as much as possible; and no way 10 mins led to a decreased ability.. it is a motivational reason most likely; we have follow up works looking into mechanisms
020
Rachit Dubey @rachitdubey.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
the sub grp analysis shows that pre-test performance is same across subgrps but the grp who used AI to get answers directly performed worse in the test phase
100
Rachit Dubey @rachitdubey.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
this is mainly due to the fact that some ppl in the AI condition just didnt use AI. we had logs of people’s AI use + their self-reports of how they used the AI; so we could do sub-group analysis based on that.
220
Rachit Dubey @rachitdubey.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
thanks for the question. the easiest problem was the last problem in the test phase, hence the performance is higher in those trials.

Rachit Dubey @rachitdubey.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
lesson learned for the future, thank you. First experience with this much press for many of us.

Rachit Dubey @rachitdubey.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
to clarify, we were trying to say that much attention is paid to drastic AI risks while ignoring the cumulative effects of AI on people.. and we do need cite papers on that end.. you can follow the body of work my lab produces and we are far away from the crowd I am now being associated with

Rachit Dubey @rachitdubey.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
in general tho, pls don’t call the authors who suffer from a bad press release ‘EA cultist‘ etc. We just presented this work at a top-tier ML venue, got positive academic reviews, and we aren’t EA funded or anything. This is a bit harrowing to junior researchers tbh..
0181
Rachit Dubey @rachitdubey.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
we are happy to run a replication to follow this, but note that our pre-test and attention checks filtered people out in a uniform manner and we also do an additional control analysis in the appendix where we further account for any attrition rate
150
Rachit Dubey @rachitdubey.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
maybe to clarify; exp 2 and exp 3 had a very similar interface for control and AI groups (obv the control grp didnt have AI) i.e., they also had a similar ”test” phase and similar demand effects. I think the media brief has just misrepresented our design..

Rachit Dubey @rachitdubey.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
finally, if we do want to study any causal effects of AI use on independent performance, the tool will needed to be taken away at some point — many RCTs conducted on high school students follow this paradigm and we followed that. Alternative suggestions for a paradigm are welcome.

(d) we will be releasing a bigger paper in the next few weeks where we find this effect generalizes to hold out tasks i.e. tasks people haven’t seen during the practice trials and that AI use interferes with people’s metacognitive judgments.
3687
Rachit Dubey @rachitdubey.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
(c) our study results are about any cognitive offloading technology (which we note in the discussion explictly), so I agree with your shovel point.. AI is unique in that it is a tech for which one can offload almost anything to and hence, in study 3 we explore if this generalizes to reading
1632
Rachit Dubey @rachitdubey.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
(b) we explictly note in the paper the limits of Study 1, for which we conduct Study 2 and 3 where we control for attrition rate and pre-test performance and explictly show that people who offload directly to AI are the ones whose post-test performance drops compared to pre-test

Rachit Dubey @rachitdubey.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
(a) the press implying 10 minutes of AI use will erode thinking is really misrepresenting our study and we never advocate for that lanaguage. It is not the author’s fault that the press is doing weird writeups about our study which we don’t endorse!

hello, so I got notified about this thread and I am one of the authors of the study and appreciate the criticism. I would like to offer our perspective with the hope to have a productive discourse. 1/n

🚨New paper led by the brilliant @emiecz.bsky.social! Everyone's talking about downsizing in government & industry, but is "lean" always better? Drawing on distributed computing and cognitive science, we show that efforts to improve short-term efficiency by reducing redundancy come at a cost! 👇
