1. There is no such thing as a "false rumor." The word for that is a HOAX. 2. The headline misses the entire point of the hoax, which is not that he was in Ohio, but that he was in a mental health facility! are there any adults left at the new york times
Republicans Promoted a False Rumor
That James Talarico Was in Ohio
The Democratic nominee for Senate in Texas spent nine days off the
trail with what he and his campaign said was a bad case of the flu. His
opponents fueled rumors, including one that spread widely before it
was debunked.
By Bayliss Wagner
Oct. 12, 2026
After James Talarico, the Democratic nominee for Senate in Texas,
spent more than a week with no campaign appearances because of
what he and his aides described as a bad case of the flu, a false rumor
circulated by conservatives exploded online.
By Sunday, a post on X claiming that Mr. Talarico had been at a mental
health facility in Ohio a story promoted by Republican allies of Mr.
Talarico's opponent, Ken Paxton - had been viewed millions of times.
Then the Ohio facility took the remarkable step of publicly announcing
on Sunday night that Mr. Talarico had in fact never been treated there.
"I've never even been to Ohio," Mr. Talarico, who returned to the
campaign trail on Friday, wrote in a post sharing the center's
statement. He called the theory "the craziest thing I've ever heard" in
an interview with MS NOW.
The New York Times reviewed time-stamped images from a security
camera at Mr. Talarico's home, which were provided by his campaign on
the condition they not be published for security reasons. The images
showed Mr. Talarico around the exterior of the home and at its
entrances between Oct. 1 and Oct. 8.

In a story on political violence (where they depict the targets as equally democratic and republican), the @nytimes.com gives a sympathetic ear to a member of Congress who was part of January 6.
Representative Derrick Van Orden, a Republican from Wisconsin seeking re-election next month, attended the “Stop the Steal” rally on Jan. 6, 2021, in support of President Trump’s false claim that he had won the 2020 election. Mr. Van Orden was outside the U.S. Capitol that day when a mob attacked it, though he has denied entering the building. He was elected to Congress in 2022That’s when the threats began.

“I was a Navy SEAL for over 22 years,” Mr. Van Orden said in an interview with The Times. “I hunted terrorists around the world a lot and was very successful at that. Never had a single threat to my family. Ever.”

Professors in the Texas A&M system have had to strip their syllabi too. According to an ACLU lawsuit, last January, Aaron George, a professor at Tarleton State University, was told by administrators to remove A Gay Manifesto, a Stonewall-era LGBTQ-rights pamphlet, and ****White Flight, a history of urban segregation****, from his American-political-history course. After a student complained that a different class the professor taught violated university policy, George was informed by administrators that it would be canceled if he did not make “necessary” (but unspecified) changes. He cut a reference in the course description to the significance of the Fourteenth Amendment for LGBTQ rights, and the class was allowed to proceed.Leo DiCaprio pointing at himself meme

Pretty wild to see Alito describe reliance on Obergefell as "much more concrete" than reliance on Roe v. Wade, because Roe was merely about "women's ideas about the kind of society that they were going to live in." If it's a Ladies Issue, he just doesn't give a shit. www.cbsnews.com/news/samuel-...
"One of the important factors we take into account in deciding whether we should reexamine a past decision is the degree to which there has been reliance on the decision," he said. "Obviously a great deal had changed in the country as a result of Obergefell. There was a lot of reliance in various ways on the decision in Obergefell."

I pointed out that people thought Roe v. Wade was settled law of the land, had organized their lives around it. Overturning Roe also would have consequences.

Obergefell, he said, was different.

"After Obergefell, people of the same sex got married and entered into contracts … it was much more concrete," he said. "Whereas with Roe, the argument was made that it had an effect on people's ideas, women's ideas about the kind of society that they were going to live in, that this would have an effect on the society. It was much more abstract than what would've been involved had we been asked to overrule Obergefell."

a little louder for the cheap seats in the back
One of the biggest myths is that men rape by mistake. Like, "Oh, they need consent training." But research is very clear: Sexual violence is not a mistake. It is an intentionally made decision by people who know they don't have consent. They just don't prioritize consent over things like status, power, domination, and sexual gratification.
For my research, I got a certificate of confidentiality from the National Institutes of Health, so my notes couldn't be subpoenaed. One of the reasons I call them perpetrators in my work is because every single person I interviewed confessed in that context. The first question I would ask them was, "When you received that email from Title IX that you were under investigation, did you know what it was about?" Every perpetrator I interviewed said "yes." If sexual assault were a miscommunication, you would be wondering, What have I possibly done wrong? That is not the way that any of them reacted because they knew.

Public policy: you don’t bring down rape by focusing on substance abuse. Two different types of problems but entirely separate public policy responses to either. Novices to these problems see the connection. Like thinking alcoholism causes black eyes.

She’s trying to solve the wrong problem. Rape is a crime against another’s body. Substance abuse is an individual’s actions that can only be treated by the individual. slate.com/life/2026/10...

Read another stupid essay about the Cornell 7 but this time the author believes “substance abuse” is the real problem. Also they’re an attorney hired by one of the seven so OF COURSE they see this as a case where “if only everyone had been sober rape wouldn’t happen.” *eye roll*
