Most Multilingual benchmarks measure what models know, not what they can reliably do. Our #ACL2026 paper introduces functional benchmarks in six languages from English to Yoruba to test whether models can actually execute tasks across languages, not just answer fixed questions about them. 🧵1/n

Thanks for the signal boost, @jlkoepke.bsky.social! We wrote this paper to respond to real confusion we saw in various bills and in conversations with legislators. So while parts may be obvious to academics steeped in this work, hopefully it can give those working in AI policy some useful clarity.

I'll be presenting a position paper about consumer protection and AI in the US at ICML. I have a surprisingly optimistic take: our legal structures are stronger than I anticipated when I went to work on this issue in Congress. Is everything broken rn? Yes. Will it stay broken? That's on us.

This is a very good piece about sovereignty as a service and you should read it. 🧵
In the 19th-century, European powers deployed build-operate-transfer schemes, or BOTs, as a tool of colonial expansion. In these schemes, private, metropolitan companies provided the capital, knowledge, and resources to construct key pieces of infrastructure — railroads, ports, canals, roads, telegraph lines, etc. — either in formal colonies, like the British in India, or in places where their government was trying to expand power and influence, like the Germans in Anatolia, the heart of the Ottoman Empire, on the eve of World War I.

Sovereignty as a service represents a modern incarnation of this colonial mode.
