7. Best works and technical talks in interviews.

- Emphasize quality over quantity. Evaluate candidates on no more than three works of their choosing, with this fact explicit in the instructions for candidates and their letter writers.

- Test technical depth. Evaluate the depth of the candidates’ understanding of the aforementioned works more than was done normally until now.

8. Additional postdocs. Establish additional postdoctoral positions for the TCS community, a temporary measure that will be phased out after a few years.

9. Workshops for identifying new theory directions. First, organize a workshop (or several) with the goal of identifying a list of modern topics related to AI; and second, run a series of workshops on each of these topics to identify fundamental directions and establish foundations and agendas for future work.

10. “TCS in the Age of AI” series at the Simons Institute. Establish a recurring and widely accessible “TCS in the Age of AI” series at the Simons Institute.

11. Opportunities for training and evaluation without AI assistance. To ensure development of necessary skills for a successful career in academia, a PhD in TCS should partially include training and evaluation components where the use of AI is forbidden.

Wrt algorithmic collusion, IVFE is (a) correlated equilibrium (b) but correlation has no value. Recently, @wangchang327.bsky.social, Chenhao Zhang, & I showed that smooth algorithms cannot learn it, while it can be computed efficiently (in 2-player games). A new preprint shows it is intractable. 👇

Inside CS there is almost no debate (now) that AI *must* be used in paper reviewing (obviously working to making it reliable, confirming to confidentiality requirements, & not training new models on submissions). One reason, especially from the AI conferences, is dealing with AI submissions. Wow! 👇

I agree that authors should be able to specify that their work is not used in AI training. However, calls to not use AI in reviewing will not age well. I expect publishers will start requiring that authors consent to AI use in the review process. And this will, generally, improve review quality.

Counterpoint: If you are an unpaid volunteer and you use available tools to do a better job of making your work thorough and detailed you should be <fill in the blank>. Not all AI use in reviewing is ethical, but reviewing that improves review quality should be encouraged and, even, required.

Summarizing in a short thread many conversations I've had recently about theoretical computer science's focus on open questions, AI's ability to solve TCS's open questions, and contrasting to economic theory's focus on asking novel questions. Tl;dr: I'm optimistic for new role of the TCS researcher.

Theoretical Computer Science inherited an aesthetic for open problems from mathematics. Algorithms and computers are complex, and mathematically understanding them is difficult. The tradition of open problems has both made TCSs central challenges clear, and made it easy-ish to evaluate research.

No, CS conferences are an equitable way to disseminate results quickly, other fields disseminate preprints less equitably. On the other hand, how does moving to journal reviews help with 10x more papers? On the other hand, probably AI review will help with the AI problem of too many papers.

Bonnie "Prince" Billy's "I see a darkness" (1999) is perhaps the best track on Johnny Cash's cover album "American III" (2000). Both: somber, reflective, wanting out. Billy rerecorded it in 2012: jaunty, gleeful, reveling in it. The music video is delightful. www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iV4...
