The online campaign to unmask Jane Doe began with pleas on X.

I have a lot of questions, among them why on earth anyone would bother to create something so convoluted and yet pointless as this certification cancelation business

Trump officials scrutinized Omar in 2019. They didn’t find citizenship issues.
The earlier review of Omar’s immigration records looked at many of the same issues being investigated now.

can't consult the Public Integrity Section if the Public Integrity Section doesn't exist www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2026/...
A government official said Monday that the Justice Department adhered to the 60-day rule in executing the search by first consulting the Public Integrity Section, as required in instances in which the timing of an investigation could be called into question. Attorney General Todd Blanche signed off on carrying out the warrant, said the official, who like others in this report spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.

The Trump administration has effectively dismantled the Public Integrity Section and often cuts the office out of politically sensitive investigations.guy tapping head meme

Before he trashed it with the Ilhan Omar search, AG Blanche was quite passionate about DOJ's 60-day rule against "actions that may have an impact on an election," which must "never be countenanced." And that was just a judge-ordered filing in a case indicted more than a year before the election.
The huge public filing that the Motion portends would also violate the Justice Manual,
which prohibits "Actions that May Have an Impact on an Election." Justice Manual § 9-85.500 (emphasis added). "Federal prosecutors and agents may never select the timing of any action,
including investigative steps, criminal charges, or statements, for the purpose of affecting any
election, or for the purpose of giving an advantage or disadvantage to any candidate or political
party." Id. Separately, prior to this case, DOJ followed an "Unwritten 60-Day Rule" summarized as follows:
• Former FBI Director Jim Comey: "[W]e avoid taking any action in the run up to an election, if we can avoid it." DOJ-OIG Report at 17.
• Former Attorney General Loretta Lynch: "[I]n general, the practice has been not to take actions that might have an impact on an election, even if it's not an election case or something like that." Id. at 18.
• Former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates: "To me if it were 90 days off, and you think it has a significant chance of impacting an election, unless there's a reason you need to take that action now you don't do it." Id. at 18.
Departures from these practices should never be countenanced because they risk allowing
prosecutors to impact national elections, but the situation is even worse here where the Special ...

Quoting this Robert Jackson speech may seem like a cliché, and maybe it is, but more people need to read it.
If the prosecutor is obliged to choose his cases, it follows that he can choose his defendants. Therein is the most dangerous power of the prosecutor: that he will pick people that he thinks he should get, rather than pick cases that need to be prosecuted. With the law books filled with a great assortment of crimes, a prosecutor stands a fair chance of finding at least a technical violation of some act on the part of almost anyone. In such a case, it is not a question of discovering the commission of a crime and then looking for the man who has committed it, it is a question of picking the man and then searching the law books, or putting investigators to work, to pin some offense on him. It is in this realm-in which the prosecutor picks some person whom he dislikes or desires to embarrass, or selects some group of unpopular persons and then looks for an offense, that the greatest danger of abuse of prosecuting power lies. It is here that law enforcement becomes personal, and the real crime becomes that of being unpopular with the predominant or governing group, being attached to the wrong political views, or being personally obnoxious to or in the way of the prosecutor himself.

back in the olden days DOJ would investigate a particular crime it believed had been committed, rather than just poking around to see if anything was wrong
The investigation is seeking information to see where it leads, the source said. For example, if records, representations related to age and immigration status contain false information, that would provide material for investigators to scrutinize further. They could also examine communications related to such matters.
