Ottawa is so geographically huge I can't imagine that people using their rec facilities from outside can be that much of a problem.

I keep pretending it's people who cross the border for work or other commitments. Like I'm not blaming somebody for going to visit their sister or for driving a transport truck.

The rest of the world has two kinds of people: 1) People who would be sent to a concentration camp if they visited the USA. 2) People who live in US-allied countries that the mad king loves to constantly threaten. ... and realistically a good number are both.

I was talking to my son who's a huge TCG buff and he was joking about how there was this famously awful NFL Uno-based TCG but because fans NFL are so fixated it was popular. It occurred to me a proper NFL TCG with cards for players & plays & teams & yardage scores would be a license to print money.

I like their Harvest Rye okay but I'm mostly sad that when they make a nice upper-middle shelf product like Blender's Select or Blender's Mash, those are always limited time. Either way haven't bought CR since the factory-closing scandal.

So what's the enforcement? I assume the people negatively impacted by abuse of Strong Mayor powers have to sue to get the mayor's action overturned. So they'd need judge (or housing tribunal?) to say that the mayor's decision didn't align with the prov and was therefore illegal?

Martin Z @pxtl.ca · 30/09/2026
Not just "sold as" but wasn't it literally part of the law that they could only use the powers to align with provincial priorities? Using it to fight against housing is supposedly illegal. But as we've all spent the last few years learning: laws are fake if they're not enforced.

Affordable housing is good! But expecting it to be made by developers in exchange for the right to build market-rate housing is bananas when we don't have enough market-rate housing *either*. Just fund it! Tax the rich landed gentry and fund building affordable housing.

it’s come to my attention that my tumblr post has been crossposted to bluesky, so I’m posting it on my account here #AntiAI #GenAI
recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

That's not practical. What would be practical is it's signed with a human ID of some kind, so there's a reputation: "this person's ID is a frequent known slop poster". There is no shortcut for credibility, so all we can do is make people put their names behind their content.
