No matter how hard they try brain scientists and cognitive psychologists will never find a copy of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony in the brain—or copies of words, pictures, grammatical rules or any other kinds of environmental stimuli. The human brain isn’t really empty, of course. But it does not contain

The fact that Geller took a public-facing job after what he did is pretty solid proof of non-rehabilitation, too. It's why any breathless mourning over his fate is insane. In *this* system he will move on and be fine. His victim won't. Why does he deserve consternation over this?

I use this letter every year in AP & in addition to being basically a perfect argument, it's also a template for engaging in consensus building with the ideologically adjacent, which is ironic considering how it's misused today.

When you have made consumerism = happiness a primary message people see regularly, you cannot be surprised when everyone labels anything making them unhappy as an economic issue.

Embedded in this critique is where suspension of disbelief falls apart for many people when it comes to batman stories today: why wouldn't a committed billionaire be able to fix a city? It's why Absolute Batman is taking off - he doesn't have that power in Gotham.

Look, if this song was anything besides an example of just how a lot of pop country is now itself just a cultural signifier for MAGA, the author might have a point. But this song is straight country slop, zero substance, intentionally. Of course we haven't heard it. It's MAGA whistles.

Hey, ProPublica reporter Jake Pearson here. I’m taking over the account to tell you about my new story. For months, I posed as a problem gambler on DraftKings to test the company's "responsible gaming" safeguards. Spoiler alert: They made me a VIP — and I lost $10K. Here's how it all went down. 🧵

Sen. Susan Collins helped steer millions in federal defense contracts to Navatek, whose CEO illegally funneled thousands of dollars to her campaign. The FBI sought to launch a probe and was eyeing Collins and other lawmakers. Then Trump gutted the unit in charge. THREAD 🧵

This kind of thing is why structural requirements are the only way. We have to change how schools receive funding, and we have to understand the intentional harm vouchers and school choice programs do to community. It's all rooted in Brown v BOE. Always has been.

The best example of this still comes from Pillars of Eternity.
A dialogue box featuring a scarred monk asking, “Are you- Are you real?”

The available options are:

1. “Yes.”
2. [Lie] “No.”
3. [Lie] “Yes.”
4. “No.”
5. “Now that you ask, I’m not so sure.”
6. “There is no way to be certain.”

There's no larger sign of how broken and insular media is than the absolute wall to wall blitz on their own behalf the last 24 hours. Trump admin is advancing policies that kill children weekly & they equivocate, but lock them out of the room where they get to hear about it & its tantrum time.

Don't fall into the trap of trying to prove a negative. If someone says "AI is conscious" then ask them to lay out the case, the processes. And no, Hugging Face as a singular example is not enough. You have no proof of burden. That's why the whole "But can you really know..." thing is a trap.

The sudden blitz of "China will beat us", "Actually it's conscious maybe", and "We should all agree to slow development" is a pattern meaning they see the oncoming bubble pop & want you leveraged along with them.

You can obviously keep going back in time with conservatives but ultimately Brown v Board is the most direct beginning of the modern conservative project. Once you understand this origin, everything they do becomes much less mysterious.

Lawsuits describing delays in care in states that have banned abortion set us down another potential path. When we compared ectopic pregnancy death rates between states that implemented strict abortion bans after Dobbs and those that did not ban abortion, we saw a growing divide.
A chart comparing ectopic pregnancy death rates in states with strict abortion bans and ones without a ban. Prior to 2020, the rate is about 4 deaths per million in states with no ban, compared to about 5.5 in states that later implemented an abortion ban. By the 2023-2025 period, the rate is 13.1 in states with a strict ban, and 7.1 in states without a ban.

Now that it's teacher posting time, I'll say there's a lot of good ideas that would require education to be a top monetary priority as much as a legislative one. I would love all this, but it's as pie in the sky as the most progressive view until you wrestle control of private money in education.

Right wing media understands that the most persuasive propaganda to their audience are singular tragedies they can use to confirm priors. These people don't understand data, so cherry-picked experiences work really well on them.

There was a very straight pipeline from crunchy granola women to MAHA, or at least proximal to MAHA, women that is an unreasonable reaction to a real issue: gender inequities in medical science. There are absolutely converts to be had.

"private school" is this funny concept in america, because it could mean: 1. a special enclave of 1%er power, privilege, and prestige 2. some cut-rate con-job bullshit 3. same as 2 but also it's explicitly, openly about abusing your children, and that's the #1 reason parents choose it
