No bike lane ever “forced” a single driver out of their car, but lack of safe bike infrastructure has literally forced people to stop biking.

I could see a child approaching from the opposite direction, and as we were on a narrow road I wanted to deter the driver from overtaking me into the child’s path. This was unreasonable according to the driver who I caught up with at the lights. Neither driver would’ve got any further if I’d moved.

This week I’ve already had 2 drivers honk their horns at me just because I didn’t get out of their way & held my position in the lane to ensure my safety. (I was trying to prevent a close pass/avoiding the door zone). Their journeys were clearly more important than mine. In one instance 1/2

Every morning I have to psych myself up before setting off. My route has different hurdles at each stage. I know where I’ll get close-passed, overtaken then blocked, beeped at for daring to be there, pinched off approaching a junction, and blocked from an ASL. At least they are predictable!

Drivers when they have to pay to park at the hospital (usually with exemptions for long admissions, disabled parking, etc.) vs Drivers when people who don't or can't drive have to pay as much or more for a bus that goes near but not to the hospital or have to pay several times more for a taxi

My mum’s partner had a disability & travelled everywhere in his “chariot”. Dropped kerbs which sloped from the residence to the road were very problematic for him. He informed me that the slope should be steep & not the entirety of the pavement. I would happily interfere with non-compliment ones.

If I worked on a factory floor operating a bandsaw I’d use a guard. I wouldn’t expect all other workers to wear protective armour so that I could use my saw without a guard. We need to start putting the onus for safety on the ones who cause the danger.

Getting to work by bike every day is just enough exercise for me, yet people think I should take a longer, more hilly route to avoid heavy traffic and fumes. I stubbornly refuse because I shouldn’t have to.

I’m in the UK. The only thing I hate about cycling to work when it’s pissing down is that drivers act as though it’s them who are getting wet. They are more impatient, more agitated, and therefore more dangerous. If the infrastructure kept me away from them I’d have no qualms about the bad weather.

When I moved to Canada I became a citizen so that I could vote & have a say in how my taxes were spent. Therefore, even though I could still vote in the UK I decided that it would be wrong as I was no longer paying into the country & also not fully aware of the concerns of residents who were.

100 years ago today: A cyclist replies to a motorist's complaint that cyclists don't pay road tax and cycle two or more abreast, holding up drivers. How things have changed.
MOTORISTS AND ROADS
MAY I humbly point out to your correspon-dent, Colin M. G. Ross, that were in existence before motoring commenced, and if only cyclists had used them they would probably have lasted for ever? It was the ad-vent of motor-cars that made a tax neces-sary owing to their destructiveness.
With regard to cyclists riding three and four abreast, this is the exception, not the rule; and the practice is usually confined to irresponsible local youths.
Cyclists as a rule never ride more than two abreast and are quite willing to ride single file where the road is narrow, but they cannot fade away for every motor-horn.

Low with Covid. A colleague told me that it’s “replaced the common cold”, implying that I’m making a fuss. Tell that to my nausea, achy body, chills, hot flushes & fatigue. She also told me that I don’t have to take a test. I KNOW that! I had one tucked in the bathroom cabinet & was curious. Grr

I took this in while working in Riga Latvia years ago. A busy arterial road cutting off the downtown from the waterfront, and this is the way to get to the water for pedestrians. On the one hand, at least they have a “connection”…on the other hand it turns pedestrians into mole people. #WarOnWalking
A busy highway/arterial road separating Riga, Latvia’s beautiful historic downtown with its public waterfront. The pedestrian connection is an underground walkway, with stairs downward, and a tight, dark connection under the road, raising issues of safety and comfort and relegating pedestrians to second class citizens with all the priority going to cars and drivers. #UrbanTruth

On the one hand, some people want to make it so that kids and other people aren't crushed to death by cars. On the other hand, some people are upset that they might have to pay attention, slow down or be inconvenienced by about 15 seconds. So you can see how it's a "war on cars."

There's enough drivers on the UK's roads. It should be 'one out, one in'. Maximum driving age of 75. As the OAPs get pruned off the top, new drivers are let in. Numbers remain just about manageable. Public transport & cycling get boosted. Helps carbon targets. Sanity maintained.

Half of the country is in "exceptionally serious drought" - putting us at more risk of wildfires and threatening our food security. Meanwhile water companies are wasting a staggering 2.87 billion litres of water every day through leaky pipes. Time to end water privatisation.
