Nuttige duiding.

Applaus. Wat een tòffe aflevering.

The burst of laughter, in that scene. I absolutely believe this was unintentional (botched even), but I'm so glad it made it in. Classic, heartening, and my favourite bit of the entire film. ♥️

"The saving grace of movies like these is that they don’t take themselves very seriously. They’re self-consciously genre movies. They’re supposed to be fun and gritty and self-referential, which is not to say that this necessarily absolves them, in any way, from criticisms such as the above."

Ingrid Bergman was born OTD in 1915. This is probably my favourite photograph of her. It was taken by Gordon Parks while Bergman and Roberto Rossellini were filming STROMBOLI (1950). It perfectly captures the judgement and scrutiny that Bergman was experiencing due to her affair with Rossellini.

In @nytopinion Dolly Parton “used humor and charm to control every interview. If a male talk-show host made a joke about her figure, she’d make an even better joke about it,” Jad Abumrad writes in a guest essay. “She never allowed herself to be a part of a story of which she was not the author.”

Opinion | It Was Always Dolly Parton’s Show
Trailing Dolly Parton around the world, I witnessed so many small moments in which she’d gracefully own her power without the slightest hint of fight.

Vivien Leigh wraps her charisma in a simple long dress and printed sash with fringe. This still is from her role as Pamela in the 1937 London production of "Because We Must" by Ingaret Giffard; it seems to have closed pretty quickly. #FashionFriday

In a 66-second sequence from The Holy Mountain (1926), two ski jumps employ 9 overlapping edits and 10 slow-motion shots. Overlapping cuts continuously repeat key actions - take-offs, descents, and landings -across shifting camera angles, while the slow-motion additionally expands duration.

Actress Valerie Hobson — in costume, dressed in a dark-coloured off-the-shoulder period gown — captured facing the camera while leaning over a snooker table, cue in hand, preparing to hit the cue ball, in a full-length black-and-white shot taken in an opulent room during a break from filming on the set of Blanche Fury (1948)

William Powell and Kay Francis wolf down lunch in a publicity photo on the set of ONE WAY PASSAGE, 1932. One of the best films either one of them ever made, and Kay's personal favorite. Posted in honor of dinner tonight with my BFF!
Powell is wearing a perfect light-colored suit and a panama hat; Kay is in her organdy dress from the movie. They are standing up in front of a car and posing as they prepare to bite into nice-looking hamburgers.

Youthful Joan Bennett, the Queen of the Pout. 📷 Preston Duncan, 1931
Bennett, still blonde, has on a ballgown with spaghetti straps and a very full skirt. She is resting her arms on a wooden rail of some sort and she sports a pout that Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen could only envy.

Okay that sounded harsher than I probably meant. But the idea is you build cognitive scaffolding to walk safely, when you're .. struggling. And those are not obvious or intuitive. But that's your toolbox. Especially for nd's.

Why should it be? These disciplines of thought are there precisely to give you a jetty when things get hard emotionally. Hardly ever obvious I don't think. "[...] all I have this hour to stand", and so on. No?

I’m a big fan of that publicity photo staple - film stars reading books. There are some surprises here, though we'll never know if some of the choices are those of the star - or of the publicist. 1/10. The greatest of them all: Eve Arnold’s photo of Marilyn Monroe reading James Joyce’s Ulysses.

"Real life is not a detective novel. Questions linger and remain. Threads go nowhere. Seemingly throwaway details take on an ominous significance, whether they deserve to or not. And loved ones are left behind in limbo, to try and deal with uncertainty on top of the unimaginable loss."
