lede = introductory section in journalism bury the lede = hiding the most relevant pieces of a story within other distracting information Allegedly, it’s spelled ‘lede’ to avoid confusion with ‘lead,’ which was the strip of metal that would separate lines of type.

Paid my respects recently to women’s baseball pioneer Maud Nelson, who is buried at Graceland Cemetery, just a long fly ball from Wrigley Field. She’s one of the finalists for SABR’s Dorothy Seymour Mills Lifetime Achievement Award: sabr.org/latest/annou... @umpireplb.bsky.social
Grave marker for Clementina B. Dellaqua (1879-1944) at Graceland Cemetery on the north side of Chicago. Her marker is not far from Ernie Banks and Minnie Miñoso in the same cemetery.
Maud Nelson, born Clementina Brida, played, managed, owned, and promoted women’s baseball from the late 19th century through the 1920s. She pitched and played third base for the Boston Bloomer Girls, Chicago Bloomer Girls, and the Star Bloomers of Indianapolis before joining a men’s team, the Cherokee Indian baseball club. Beginning in 1911 she became manager and scout for the Western Bloomer Girls, which she and her husband also owned. Though she stopped playing regularly around 1922, she continued to manage and promote women’s teams into the early 1930s. Her contributions to the game were recognized in 2001 with her election to the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. Nelson’s long and illustrious career has led some researchers to push for her election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

A stone cottage with a sign that says Greenhouse stands in front of a crumbling 3-story structure with broken siding and windows. These structures are part of the old House of David religious colony in Benton Harbor, Michigan.

I am good with this! It gets the words “El Paso” back into the bowl’s name. It also led be down a food history rabbit hole:
The Old El Paso brand does have roots in the El Paso region. In the early-mid twentieth century, three El Paso-area canneries emerged as top competitors in canned Mexican foods: Mountain Pass Canning, Valley Canning, and Ashley’s Mexican Foods. Mountain Pass Canning Company is sometimes noted as the “original” Old El Paso, but the story is a bit more complicated.

In 1912, A.C. Powell moved his family from Marfa, Texas to Deming, New Mexico, where he started a tomato farm.[viii] Powell founded the Mountain Pass Canning Company in Deming in 1916 for tomato packing. He moved the operation to Canutillo, Texas (just northwest of El Paso) in 1925 and eventually expanded to canning green beans, pinto beans, green chilies, sweet potatoes, and other Mesilla Valley produce.[ix] By the late 1940s, Mountain Pass Canning sold several canned Mexican foods like taco and enchilada sauces, following the example set by George Ashley’s restaurant and cannery on the eastside of El Paso.[x] Ashley’s business was booming after getting a military contract in 1938 to provide US servicemen with Mexican food, including their innovative canned tortillas, enchilada sauce, and Spanish rice.[xi]
