X is bad, though
I admire John Gruber. I think he’s a great writer. I think he’s smart as hell. He’s annoyingly funny, too. I am impressed and inspired by his success with both Daring Fireball and The Talk Show. I get excited when John links to one of my apps or articles.…

Has the novelty faded? A couple of days ago I saw a MacBook Neo in person for the first time. For those of us not hosting a weekly podcast about it, the Neo is still pretty new. 😀

Kind of obsessed with this spooky season scene my 12-year-old painted today.
Acrylic paint on a roughly 8x8-inch canvas. Yellow and brown grass background with a couple of pumpkins and white sheet-style ghosts floating over top.

I (probably obviously) disagree with John's POV here, but let's grant that all of what he says is true, and that X is good in all the ways listed in the post; let's even grant that's true for all demographics (it's not). It'd *still* be a site that pays known CSAM distributors at its owner's behest.

WELL NOW, would you look at that? A massive, 4-YEAR-LONG study of NEARLY 30 MILLION people in France found that individuals who received a COVID-19 mRNA vaccine had a 74% LOWER risk of death from severe COVID-19 compared to unvaccinated individuals and ZERO increased risk of all-cause mortality.

I’m sorry to hear about the death of Mark Stephens, as reported on Reddit. He wasn’t the first or last InfoWorld columnist to write under the name “Robert X. Cringely,” but he was the Cringely who was a tech-media phenomenon in the 1980s and 1990s. news.ycombinator.com/item?id=499494…

NEW FROM ME: "As Bloomberg says, DHS *wants* to create its own deportation airline. But we’ve known that since last year. What the new documents actually show is that they’ve failed. No one wants be an ICE pilot or an ICE flight attendant." gillianbrockell.com/whats-missin...

What’s missing from Bloomberg’s story about the DHS ‘deportation’ fleet
In the ongoing saga of DHS’s “deportation fleet,” Bloomberg gets the facts vaguely right and story all wrong.

Visiting my university’s new, expensively-refurbished space for startup incubators and senior management and cannot imagine a better illustration of the American university at this moment in time than a breathlessly press-released “collaboration room” featuring a single desk and chair.
A room labelled “collaboration room” featuring a single desk and chair.

A $3 @mta.info subway fare and some good Q train timing can buy you one hell of a view of the July 4th fireworks and the Brooklyn Bridge light show! Huge shoutout to the train operator for slow rolling over the Manhattan Bridge and the conductor for announcing it.

As for Xcode, I think it’s mostly fine once you have a project set up. But it definitely is way too complicated to get a project started. Unfortunately, I highly doubt Apple will ever address this. It works for their in house projects, that’s usually all they care about.

As a Mac developer for 42 years, I found this essay interesting. I definitely agree that coding is not the primary skill of being a developer, and even if coding could be reduced to zero it wouldn’t reduce the total effort needed to make a quality app by all that much.

That is a very cool video. In the extremely unlikely event that this contraption is real, what is the point of the helmet? Pretty hard to imagine a scenario where a helmet is going to make any difference.

Yes, I’m old enough to remember eight tracks from when they were new. They were always terrible personally I wouldn’t touch them with a 10 foot pole. I did have a lot of vinyl and a lot of cassettes, though. I have no interest in going back.

I simply mean that any bureaucratic system produces crazy results, but no thinking human would ever do. We had extensive dealings with the Foster system, and the children were simply treated as numbers.
