What’s the evidence on rent control? I charted the findings from 112 studies: Great for rent-controlled tenants ✅ But: Pushes up rents for other people ❌ Pushes down new housing construction ❌ Pushes down building quality ❌

Je Shen
Je Shen 艺术家

In a rapidly changing environment, identity cannot be treated as a fixed or definitive construct. Je Shen approaches evolution as a controlled process — one that allows transformation without compromising coherence.

Rather than preserving a rigid image, the system is designed to absorb change, respond to new contexts, and evolve through intentional adjustments. Identity is therefore not understood as a finished outcome, but as an ongoing structure shaped by continuity and informed adaptation.

This perspective allows growth without fragmentation, ensuring that evolution strengthens recognition instead of diluting it.

A Distinct Voice in Contemporary Asian Painting

I was born in Jiangxi, China, in 1973.

My paintings explore the relationship between light, nature, and matter. Through layered surfaces and delicate floral compositions, I try to create landscapes that feel both familiar and timeless.

I have always been fascinated by the way light transforms colour. By building each painting through successive layers and applying every blossom individually, I create surfaces that continuously change with natural light, revealing new textures, reflections, and subtle details from different perspectives.

For me, painting is a beautiful dialogue with nature. Rather than simply depicting a place, I hope to capture a fleeting atmosphere,a moment of stillness, meditation, and balance that reflects the beauty I find in the world around me.

Over the years, my work has attracted the attention of collectors, critics, and contemporary art publications throughout Asia, particularly in China, Korea, and Japan. I am grateful that my paintings continue to find homes and connect with people in many different parts of the world.

Occurs to me that we’re at the end of an ultimately very anomalous century-long evidentiary golden age during which it was extremely easy to produce an accurate visual/auditory record of reality, and relatively difficult to produce a false one.

Second (but *not* last) #SCOTUS ruling is in Hunter v. United States. For an 8-1 Court (with Justice Thomas dissenting), Justice Kagan holds that a plea agreement to *not* appeal a sentence is unenforceable when it would result in a miscarriage of justice: www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/25p...

Justices Gorsuch, Sotomayor, and Jackson concur in Hunter v. US to get pretty close to saying that plea bargaining is unconstitutional. Worth a read.
In our times, the jury trial has given way to a conveyor
belt of plea bargains. At least some responsibility for that
development lies with this Court. When confronted with
coercive prosecutorial tactics designed to induce defendants
to take plea deals, the Court has often condoned those prac-
tices or let them pass in silence.
Today, the Court begins to correct course. It rules that
prosecutors may not always leverage their plea-bargaining
power to induce a defendant to forego the right to contest
his sentence on appeal. I agree and write separately to out-
line how we got here and some of the work still ahead.

I understand that people (often for very valid reasons) denigrate classical economics as a field, but I really wish that people would read anything at all about economics, because the answer to this is quite literally right there on the first page.
One person says: The meta now is to wait for some big exogenous event > increase prices far more than is justified by said event > never lower prices when the event passes > 'what are you going to do? Not drive? Not use electricity? Not eat?'

Then they're quote-skeeted with: This is a big reason why "look at this graph, it says you're better off" generates rage on here. It's detached from the fact that nothing is ever going to go down in price ever again without a huge and probably quite forceful intervention from ~somewhere~

Our districts are huge compared to other countries, but America is big. To a large degree that's just baked in. If we followed the cube root rule (~692), we'd still have many more people per legislator than any peer democracy. And there are good reasons no real democracy has thousands of seats.
