ere we show with three national surveys of non-Hispanic white adults (conducted from 2021 to 2025) that support for white nationalism is (1) higher among white people encountering personal hardship and local social distress, consistent with strain theories3,16; (2) unrelated to local racial composition or recent demographic change, complicating status threat accounts4,17,18; and (3) elevated among white people with close friendships primarily online, consistent with theories of extremism driven by online mobilization7,10,19.

I wouldn't call it disinfo either, unless it's intentional, I'd classify doom more as 'misleading' info, tho I suppose that can be part of misinfo as a broader category. I think the crux of it is that saying 'there's nothing that can be done' is false but otherwise totally agree with your points.

Plenty to reflect about re: the Arday affair, but I'm going to repeat this one thing. The playbook the right used here is effective even though it's not especially sophisticated, as it relies on the audience to do the dirty work. I've been calling it "Trojan horse propaganda", let's go with that. 1/

Yes absolutely, I like Mike Mann's perspective that we can convey all the serious factual and harmful realities using science-based communication without having to resort to emotional manipulation and potentially unrealistic extreme portrayals that send people into maladaptive panics.
241
Sander van der Linden @profsanderlinden.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
So this combination typically gives....horrific (emotion)....all going to live under water (extreme)....no way back (fatalism). It may be true that one of the headlines is stronger or weaker on any of the three dimensions (not claiming it was all perfect) but much more than just negative emotions.
010
Sander van der Linden @profsanderlinden.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
You're welcome just want to clear up any confusion. It was a little more complex than that, so what was altered were three things (1) scaremongering/fear, (2) extremity, & (3) fatalism so they differed on multiple dimensions, i.e., but for doom those three were added consistently in conjunction.
110
Sander van der Linden @profsanderlinden.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
Yes agreed, we have a media piece about it coming up I'm going to see if I can clarify this to make sure it's not misinterpreted. Agree fear messaging can be a different thing in and of itself too. Thanks!

How are we misusing doom? We reference to scholarly literature on doom and operationize stimuli accordingly. Do share your thoughts.
100
Sander van der Linden @profsanderlinden.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
Yes in hindsight maybe not ideal description - I think we had a long para in the original draft that got edited down for brevity but maybe should have made the multi-dimensional nature clearer!

010
Sander van der Linden @profsanderlinden.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
Yes indeed correct & the headlines & treatment we tested never use only one of those ingredients I think that’s part of the false characterisation of the OG tweet. I do see now that maybe we should have been clearer in the definition, we do ref to papers that make this clear in the same para but
110
Sander van der Linden @profsanderlinden.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
But I wouldn’t claim CDR alone is sufficient, I think I’ve said numerous times we need a strong combination of CDR and emissions reductions. The biophysical limit to emissions reductions is much less of a concern.
000
Sander van der Linden @profsanderlinden.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
Fear appeals or scaremongering are one of three major ingredients of climate doom; extremity/exaggerate, overly scary language, and claim inevitability/nothing can be done.
130
Sander van der Linden @profsanderlinden.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
Ps I agree it’s important that anti-doom research isn’t weaponized by industry to support inaction. Kinda like the nuanced social media-kids debate, we can say that the evidence of harm on kids is complex but we need to be careful not to let SM companies off the hook for harms or weaponize that.
010
Sander van der Linden @profsanderlinden.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
Yes so that’s not how I’d define doom. I mean warming can be reduced & *some* climate impacts can be reversed in the most optimistic scenario, some can’t, but CDR alone isn’t going to cut it - clearly we need steep co2 reductions too. Doom says nothing can be done or reversed, and that’s not true.
210
Sander van der Linden @profsanderlinden.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
I mean I agree if you take economic, political, and social feasibility conditions into account and I imagine we need a strong combination of removal and emission reductions at any rate (not just CDR) but the hopeful part is that these factors are open to change if we can mobilise it.
100
Sander van der Linden @profsanderlinden.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
Ha yes well we did mellow it down a little bit otherwise the test would be too easy and I can see nitpicking about some stimuli it’s hard to isolate 100% but most of them are pretty hardcore doom in my view!
110
Sander van der Linden @profsanderlinden.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
But the point is that these deaths can be limited, some even prevented, they are not inevitable. It’s because of the gross neglect and global inaction on climate change not because there’s nothing that can be done. So much can be done to prevent deaths.
