After missing my connection, I’m in Copenhagen without a lot of sleep so this may bit a bit too something, but I’m having a moment appreciating globalization, at the restaurant bar, a glass of French wine, people with ancestry from all over, & old slow southern rock in the air.

Yeah, I heard this years ago. Great students who could change the world handing out lanyards and proselytizing. Organized EA is kind of like economics or utilitarianism repackaged with lots of ick.

Like Trump with Iran, Bessent poked the bear and revealed his own weakness. Investors need to be convinced that American exceptionalism is going to return. Instead, Bessent tried price controls in our borrowing market when we now owe over $30 trillion, a move worthy of a Maduro, Peron, or Castro.

War doesn't just destroy factories and kill people — it makes everything left standing less productive. New paper shows half of #Ukraine wartime output collapse comes from allocative TFP loss: resources are trapped in the wrong places. The hidden cost of war is misallocation. tinyurl.com/54w5chce

Thus the attention to r-g ! Economic growth or low interest rates both help make debt sustainable. Trend inflation is (tax code aside) irrelevant. Surprise inflation reduces debt today, but raises fears of surprise inflation in the future and makes debt more costly in the future.

Jonathan A. Parker @profjaparker.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
The right way depends on the question. Bit the ratio of real interest payments to gdp measures share of gdp required to service debt to maintain its real value. ((The real interest less the growth in real potential gdp)*debt)/gdp would measure share of gdp required to keep debt to gdp constant.

Jonathan A. Parker @profjaparker.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
The problem with this is that in interest rates can move a lot in a short amount of time. But if you want to focus on this, use real interest payments. Nominal interest rates are higher for steady high π, and lower for steady low π, but this difference is irrelevant for the burden of the debt.
