After 7 years, one of my ornamental clematis finally decided to reach out horizontally and take advantage of the top crossbar of the trellis. I'm happy that it finally looks how I'd imagined! But also a little confused that it took this long.
A photo of a vine with large dark purple flowers. It is wrapped around a support structure, mostly climbing vertically but with some tendrils starting to grow horizontally along the top.

Turns out if a squirrel is yelling at you in your back yard, you should not ask "What are you going to do about it, you little bitch?" while giving it the finger. Turns out the answer is "chew through the fascia board into your attic, and also possibly sabotage your hammock."

This is a cat checkpoint. Relinquish your most recent cat photo from your phone
A photo of a grey and white long-haired cat who is poking his head out of a paper bag. His eyes look unusual because the bag is pulling his skin tight as he pushes his head out.

St. Cloud, Minnesota. I've never had an actual bad experience there, but something about that place puts me on edge. (Never been to St. Cloud, Florida, but I did have the best donut of my life from a bakery there, and I don't even *like* donuts. So Florida wins in this one very niche category.)

I know there are a million bigger problems in the world right now, but as a tradeswoman this kind of thing fills me with incandescent rage. It's 2026, why are you gendering your ad for a god damn backpack?

Finally started taking public transportation to work a couple weeks ago. It takes about 65 minutes (including walk and transfer time) vs 18 minutes to drive. Biggest hurdle was forcing myself to get out of bed earlier. I only managed because of looming construction delays.

Every reply and quote here mentions their ending of DEI, capitulating to MAGA, donating to the 2024 presidential inauguration, racism, and/or ICE. The puff piece they inevitably cough up will not mention any of those things.

Catullean. Choked on it at the state spelling bee in 8th grade. I think my stab in the dark was "Catalean" and it was just now too. Also, desiccant.

Even if we had a surplus of funding and no social problems, this is just not something that needs subsidizing.

Shout out to any veterinarians out there. I've had way too many non-routine situations lately, and every single one of you has been patient and compassionate to a fault. Truly don't know how you do it and keep your sanity as well as you do.

It was an incredible honor to represent tens of thousands of rapid responders across Minnesota who have spent the last 118 days standing up for our neighbors. Here’s my speech from yesterday at No Kings St. Paul. 1/

Your semi-regular reminder that a Twin Cities weather feed exists and you can pin it up top for easy access and updates. Local mets + weather news + anything tagged with #mnwx (and use the tag if you’ve just been on the road! Wondering what the driving conditions are like at the moment…)

I always loathed the Target shopping experience, so boycotting them has been easy, but on the pettier side I am absolutely reveling in all the hate they are getting now. They're just Wal-Mart with better PR, and now everyone sees that. It's great.

Can anyone recommend a local (Twin Cities) tattoo shop that is on the right side of things, does decent work, but doesn't have a monthslong waiting list and doesn't require an Instagram account? Bonus points if they're easy to get to from south Minneapolis.

But one thing was clear: Despite the drawdown, ICE is still here. They’re stalking legal observers in our communities, at times doing so with no regard for traffic laws or safety.

Did anyone else's homeowner's insurance go up a *lot* over last year? Mine increased 33%. I know natural disasters have hammered the whole industry in the last few years, but damn.

I’m on the scene at Franklin and 1st. A convoy of about a couple dozen ICE/HSI agents broke the entryway into an apartment building at 6am. No warrant presented. Less than 24 hours ago, Tom Homan announced the end of large convoys in Minnesota… Bullshit.

Is there any kind of database for presumed/confirmed ICE abduction victims? I noticed a car that's been parked in the same weird way for at least 24 hours now. If there's a way to notify their family/friends of its location without involving the cops, that would be nice.

It's 10:30pm, are you harassing your representatives? Left a vm with the Klob telling her to abolish ICE and release detainees and if she wants my vote for governor she had better convince me that she's different from a Republican. Smith's vm full. Omar will go down swinging, did not call her.

Minneapolis house dwellers: shovel out your garage bins in the alley while it's warm! This morning almost all of the bins in my alley were still behind the plow berm, and the poor sanitation workers were pulling individual bags out of them. (They're a lot more dedicated than I am.)

As a former welder (different trade now but still weld sometimes) from Minnesota, this Amber Czech thing is really getting to me... especially since I used to go out of my way to encourage other women to get into the trades. Fucking awful.

Great day at the fair yesterday. Had fun with a friend I don't see in person enough. A stranger gave me a coupon for deep fried cheesecake. And, best of all, we got to watch a calf being born, AND the front row of spectators get splashed. Truly a high point of my life.

Screenshot of a post made by Zach Brand-Wiita on Facebook on 12 August 2020. The bottom of the post features the Flag of the United Federation of Planets from 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘳 𝘛𝘳𝘦𝘬, modeled on the Flag of the United Nations.

The post reads:

Listen, it may be silly, but even though it is a flawed work of corporate art with its share of problematic elements, the vision of a spacefaring, implicitly socialist, utopian future without racism, sexism, classism, or other forms of bigotry or oppression in the 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘳 𝘛𝘳𝘦𝘬 franchise has meant a lot to me since I was a child.

In the 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘳 𝘛𝘳𝘦𝘬 novels, 12 August is Federation Day -- the anniversary of the founding of the United Federation of Planets, an egalitarian union of worlds, in 2161. The first book establishing this was published in 2006.

Three years ago today, the alt-right tried to make 12 August their day. I'm glad they've lost that fight. I want 12 August to be my silly little geeky day to think about how a work of art imagines a better future.

Happy Federation Day, y'all.
