A tall, slender boogeyman with exaggeratedly long arms quietly slides open the closet door of a child's bedroom. Jostled hangers slide to either side as the creature emerges from behind the cover of clothing. Red dots glow like molten beads set in deep sockets. A double wrinkled ridge defines a wide brow while elfish ears knife out and back, framing a sloped dome that nearly touches the top shelf. The closet rod bars its way forward, crossing just below its round, snub nose. Salivating, its jaw hangs open in a V-shaped smile lined with short sharp teeth.

noted! (to be clear, my question was 100% sincere.) and I do think there's some wuxia in its DNA, a modern, western riff on the genre (maybe more specifically xianxia). at least, that's what Carpenter was aiming for/ inspired by - iirc his biggest influence was Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain

I need to revisit, but is it really racist? iirc it's pretty expertly replicating Hong Kong horror/wuxia, and the white guy Jack Burton is the punchline - a John Wayne parody who assumes he's the hero and is too much of a doofus to see he's far from it. (which feels politically/generally on point.)

I have no nostalgia for Big Trouble because I was barely alive when it came out and saw it as an adult. but... it's Kurt Russell parodying John Wayne, intruding on a Hong Kong wuxia horror movie where he never realizes he's not the hero. it's fun and funny, with great practical effects, score, cast.

Lady in the Fog is a relatively lightweight noir (a "quota quickie") but I found some really interesting stuff to mine from the film, re: the way British & American detective-story traditions intersect in it. and the restoration looks Very Good.
