I read a couple hundred death penalty cases for a case once and I think you’d all be shocked at how often this happens. The death penalty is one of the cruelest things in our system, an obvious violation of the 8th amendment cruel and unusual punishment clause, but we just love to kill.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

No idea what the effects are of surviving a "lethal" dose of pentobarbital. Is she out of the woods, or still a chance she might be dying more slowly? Are there expectations of long-term effects to major systems or organs?

The appellate court system had stayed this execution today to allow for additional proceedings. John Roberts’s Supreme Court stepped in and said, “nah, kill her tonight.” This is the result.

Christa Pike received two lethal injections in Tennessee tonight. But it did not kill her. She is now receiving medical treatment (perhaps because the Court had to admit how badly they had fucked this up). Horrible all around. www.tennessean.com/story/news/c...

What I hate is how we as a society have continuously tried to hide the barbarism behind questionable claims of mercy. Moving from firing squad to gallows to electric chair to gas to this. It's not mercy for the condemned; it's mercy for us, making it easier to stomach and hand wave away.

“I am not afraid to die. I’m only nervous about the process.” Just an unbelievable failure of governing and the legal system and basic decency.
Before learning Monday that Lee would not be intervening in her case, Pike wrote in a letter to NBC News, shared by her spiritual adviser:
"Whether my clemency is granted or not, l am at peace."
"I am not afraid to die," wrote Pike, who has been on death row for more than three decades. "I'm only nervous about the process."

It's rare to find people like this ER doctor who can speak truth to your pain. And when you do... it's beautiful, but it hurts so much. It hurts the part of you that has always known you deserved to be treated this way, even as others made you believe you didn't.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.
