Hello from the endangered modernist masterpiece that is Pride Cleaners Architect: Gerald Siegwart, 1959
Color photo of the signs in front of Pride Cleaners. The most noticeable is a very midcentury design featuring 5 leaf shaped panels in different colors on tall black posts, each individual panel bearing one letter from the word "pride."Color photo of the distinctly midcentury entrance to Pride Cleaners emphasizing its bonkers angles. Above us, the roof comes to a dramatic triangular point, offering both style and shelter. The two glass walls of the entrance also meet in yet another triangle underneath it.Color photo of a sign in one of the windows surrounding the entrance to the cleaners. "Pride" is written in a lowercase font and on angle three times in blue, red and blue again. A strip of LED lights runs underneath.

1/2 I was introduced to this gorgeous girl by @dmercer.bsky.social & had to go see her myself. The AIA Guide calls this "an essay in Gothic," which is cool & all, but doesn't quite explain why nearly every creature on this thing is snacking on some other creature. Architect: Louis Bourgeois, 1887
Color photo taken at a wide angle of a gorgeous home constructed of buff stone and liberally decorated with incredibly ornate Gothic detailing. Color close-up of the ornate dormer atop the home, which is ornamented by crocketed finials on each side, a crocketed arch at top finished off by an acanthus leaf at its apex, and detailed foliate carvings around the arched window.Color photo looking straight up at the building's highly ornate turret. Interestingly, it sits on a sharp corner above the first floor with layers of foliate corbeling partially obscured by the corner, making it look like the structure was plopped there fully formed by some giant. Color detail of the archway leading to the home's sheltered entry. The arch is decorated by highly detailed rinceau featuring leaves and grape clusters, with a super gross dragon/rat/IDK feasting on a bird right smack in the center. The carving is so detailed that you can see that the bird's wings are spread in distress as the dragon sinks its teeth into the bird's neck. Above this is a sharp, crocketed arch, the tympanum filled with dense foliate designs.

A little further down the block is that other banger -- the home George Dunne built for himself. The Dunnes are not only listed as living here in a 1901 directory, they somehow managed to stuff 100 guests in here for their 15th wedding anniversary in 1902. Architect: Henry J McMullen, 1900.

A white SUV is parked in front, partially blocked the raised basement from view.Color detail of a pediment featuring a winged cherub doing some ribbon dancing with fanciful foliate designs.Color photo of a pediment above the highest windows, featuring a woman who appears to be unraveling her classical robe.Newspaper clipping from the February 17, 1902 Chicago Daily Tribune. 1/2 Another Griser banger, this time in Buena Park. The original plan for this site was an apartment hotel, but that got scrapped in favor of a regular apartment complex. The extensive first floor lobby between buildings is a relic of that earlier plan. Architect: Louis Keith Griser, 1926
Color photo of a U-shaped, buff colored building with extensive terra cotta ornament and a centrally located one story lobby. The base of the building features highly decorated terra cotta and the parapet is deeply crenelated. Color photo of the building's entrance, taken from across the street. Above a striped awning is a parapet decorated by reliefs with those penis-looking trefoil Gothic arches arranged by size across the top. The entrance is flanked by two large engaged columns wearing hats with finials; they look like towers and are wearing mini versions of themselves. The doorway itself has been modernized, and now sports large, glass security doors. Vehicles and a small skinny tree obscure view of some of these details.Color detail of a highly ornamented parapet wall liberally slathered with terra cotta in Gothic designs. There's a grid of diamond patterned terra cotta lattice enlivened by rosettes spaced out across its expanse. Above this, a course of fat trefoils also dotted with rosettes. At the the bottom, arches scrolled shields are centered between spandrels with mouchettes and quatrefoils. Color photo of the terra cotta clad base of the building, which is ornamented by a frieze of mouchette wheels punctuated by small, corbelled mini turrets. The facade features four low narrow windows with equally narrow shields above them.

Color photo of two greystone two-flats clad in combinations of smooth and rough stone. Buildings' layouts mirror one another with raised porches at the ends and prominent bays in the middle, each topped with a triangle parapet. On left building, parapet also features a bracketed cornice painted light green, a color picked up at tip of triangle. Triangle on building on right features dense, vine-like curls and a crocket on top.

The obsessive @chgohoods.bsky.social fan has logged on. I do admit to some bias in displaying Steve's South Side designs, but you can rectify this imbalance buying his prints featuring other neighborhoods.
Color photo of part of my living room. It’s hard to see because the frames are so reflective, but there are 5 prints on the wall by The Chicago Neighborhoods. The neighborhoods featured are South Shore, Pullman, Bronzeville, Hyde Park and West Pullman.Color photo of a portion of my living room. Two Chicago Neighborhoods prints hang above a pair of overcrowded bookshelves. The neighborhoods featured are Englewood and Woodlawn.Color photo of part of a wall in my entryway. Two Chicago Neighborhoods prints are up; one of the Givins Castle in Beverly and the other of the historic railroad stations in Beverly and Morgan Park. In between the two are smaller frames with old ads and a portion of a Sanborn fire map.Color photo of a wall in my messy home office. There are about a million things on the wall, but 2 of those things are immediately recognizable as the Steve Shanabruch's style, in this case created for Preservation Chicago's 7 Most Endangered campaigns. The 2 prints are the Altgeld Gardens Commercial Building (2022) and Schulze Banking Company Building (2024).

1/2 I was minding my own business when this gold terra cotta glinted in the sun & caught my magpie eye. Turns out we've got a tiny Art Deco storefront in a pretty rose, ivory & gold color palette, & Peter Francis Geraci has chosen to put a gigantic awning over it. Architect: Edward Nordlie, 1939
Color photo of a small, one story storefront with a flat roof and large shop windows on either side of a door. Above this, a large awning advertising Peter Francis Geraci Law. A wide angle color photo from underneath the awning reveals Art Deco terra cotta tiles above two large shop windows and a recessed entry.Color close-up of the terra cotta ornamentation underneath the awning. Directly above a partially seen window is a frieze of rose colored terra cotta tiles with horizontal fluting. Above this is a line of ivory Art Deco tiles with volutes curving towards the center of the tile to frame a stylized starburst below and a chevron pattern above. At the very edge of each tile are half triangles that create diamond shapes when placed together. In the space above each of them sits a golden rosette on a bed of rose colored tiles with tiny vertical fluting. To the right and down the side of the storefront is a rectangular gold tile with a stylized sunburst, and underneath it the same rose colored tiles, this time placed so the fluting is vertical.A color photo of the side of the building. Mostly of common brick, there's a strip of terra cotta right towards the front. At the very top we get gorgeous, rose colored Art Deco fans. A few rows beneath this is centered a rectangular panel with a stylized sunburst in gold. Directly beneath this can be seen just a hint of rose colored vertically fluted terra cotta that continues to the base of the building.

Most attention to second floor, an arched full-size window with a substantial Juliette balcony, flanked by two rectangular Friends of Juliette. Cute mini green tile Mansard roof above. Ground floor crazy for arches, with triple window in center, doors within arched recesses on each side. Framing all this stuff? Wreathed columns of course.
