I felt so strongly about this nextdoor comment that I decided to do a dramatic reading of it. I hope you'll listen with the volume on to fully appreciate the quiet reverie.

I like this idea. “Dressing up” is like wearing a costume in the US since few people dress that way daily now. But enough people wearing different outfits and we reach everybody’s/nobody’s special, so dressing uniquely no longer automatically makes a statement.

To add to this, knees are a use-’em-or-lose-’em kind of body part. If you want good knees in old age, you should walk/jog/run regularly starting by your mid-30s, prompting your body to strengthen your knees in response to the wear. Walking 35 minutes twice a day would be perfect for this.

There is a deep state conspiracy making people hate him, it’s just that he’s the one heading up said conspiracy. After all, he is the deep state.

I agree, also, tens of thousands sounds like a very dramatic undercount?

More housing within cities' existing footprints would reduce the cost of multi-family housing but not of detached houses. Constraining population via blocking apartments suppresses demand for SFHs. A city population going from 2 million to 3 million will dramatically raise demand/prices for SFHs.

These folks are suppressing the price of my house. The price of a SFH will be higher if 3 million people live in the metro area than if 2 million people live there. They have the effect of apartments on SFH prices *inverted*.

Can’t speak to oral appliances but regarding sleep apnea in general, even mild apnea can be a major quality-of-life drag. And it’s hard to notice because it usually sets in slowly. I’d strongly recommend trying to address it. A CPAP machine made a big difference for me with barely-qualifying apnea.

Ordinal numbers make the most sense since you can have street numbers like 1234 #A or 1234 1/2 and similar

@volts.wtf KQED had Sen. Murphy on recently and I was pleased to hear him making mostly good points and not falling for the usual R claim of Ds being obsessed with gender. www.kqed.org/forum/201010...

We speak with Sen. Chris Murphy about his new book, “Crisis of the Common Good,” and the values he believes could unite America — or at least the Democratic Party.

Pre-Covid, a place I’d frequent was next to a parking garage. I could pay $5 for parking or $5 for a milkshake on the way back plus parking validation. How could I say no?

For all the endless hoopla about "Democrats connecting with ordinary people," 99% of which is "Democrats must rigidly adhere to the directives of elite reactionary centrists," Steyer here is talking about an issue in the same way that actual people who vote for Democrats do. Good stuff.

The John Roberts Five-Fifths Compromise could last about as long as the earlier Three-Fifths Compromise, for reference 75ish years (1787-1863).

@gregdoucette.bsky.social do you have thoughts on how the coming Republican-driven US debt crisis/crises will play out? It is impressive how they keep doing things to make it worse and happen sooner

The Maryland legislature recently passed a big energy omnibus bill that is effectively a huge bag of smaller policies. It's difficult to even summarize -- there's stuff on permitting, plug-in solar, data center, on & on. @jamiedemarco.bsky.social has pulled it all together into a master list:

The worst part of this policy is that building more multifamily housing makes SFH more valuable, not less. More people and more shops etc nearby increases demand and thus prices

During thunderstorms, electric discharges in the air cause trees to glow with an ultraviolet aura. You can't see it with your eyes, but researchers have finally managed to measure it & recreate it in the lab. 🧪🔭 news.agu.org/press-releas...
Corona UV signals observed under a thunderstorm on 27 June 2024. (a) Approximate location of all 859 corona UV signals observed during the ∼1.5-hr observation period on a sweetgum tree. Each corona UV signal is colored by the number of total isotropic UV photons between 255 and 273 nm emitted by the corona discharge, as estimated from the illuminated pixels observed in that frame. The boxes depict the Corona Observing Telescope System (COTS) UV camera field of view, and the colors indicate the observation time for the branch within each box. Panel (b) as in (a), but for all 93 corona UV signals observed during the ∼20-min observation period on a loblolly pine tree. Locations of boxes and corona UV signals are only approximate because the wind blew the branches in and out of the COTS field of view. Note a corona UV signal is defined as a contiguous bundle of several illuminated pixels.Coronae glow on the tips of spruce needles, induced by charged metal plates in a laboratory. These weak electric discharges subtly singe the tips of leaves and needles, and new observations indicate they may occur ubiquitously across treetops under thunderstorms. Credit: William Brune

Rainy week so far. Pros: no need to water the plants Cons: a lot of water. So much water. Too much water. Pots with poor drainage are flooded. Oh, the humanity

“When Liu, 20, decided to return to skating, she did so with conditions. She’d wear what she wants. Dance to the music she wants. Eat what she wants. Take breaks when she wants…. [Skating] would be the vehicle through which she displayed the real Alysa.” she did it! her! way!!

Alysa Liu’s Olympic run came with terms. Her choreographer helps her express them
Liu is the best U.S. hope for an Olympic medal in women's figure skating, which would be the country's first in the competition since 2006.
