One of the really interesting findings here is that microtransit is associated with better healthcare access and health outcomes because riders are able to have reliable transportation to medical appointments.

From electric vehicles to “DEI bike lanes,” transportation has become a partisan battleground. But 50 years ago, Washington came together to save transit systems, address deadly car designs, and reduce vehicle pollution. Much has changed—and it’s not just MAGA. My exploration (gift link) 🧵

Why US Transportation Policy Became a Partisan Battleground
Republicans and Democrats keep clashing over what was once a comparatively nonpartisan issue. When did getting around turn into another thing for Americans to fight about?

Trump is leaving communities in Massachusetts and disaster victims in blue states without essential disaster relief. Denying disaster relief to score political points is unacceptable. Trump must stop putting politics over people and deliver aid to Americans who need it.

Regardless of the merits of data centers, this is not an appropriate use of public lands, because it monopolizes the land for a single private entity rather than keeping the land as multi-use, defeating the whole idea of public lands. Let Valar purchase its own land if it needs space.

Promising a referendum after Trump leaves office is a dangerous trick. It destabilizes the economy at a risky, complex juncture and it assumes Trump will go in January 2029. You KNOW he won't go willingly. He will do everything to stay in power. Fixing the date by Trump's actions is risky business.

US military spending isn't just DOD. As David Vine writes in @motherjones.com, it is spread across at least 15 other federal agencies, and the total likely exceeds the combined military budgets of every other nation on Earth. These figures are "likely to stun most Americans,” notes one expert.

Think Trump’s $1.5 trillion Pentagon budget request is outrageous? This'll blow your mind.
We already spend at least that much on the US military each year, and maybe a lot more.

We just hit 1 million Fremont Bridge bike trips so far this year
Data through September 29. Sometime Monday evening (September 28), somebody rolled across the Fremont Bridge and registered the one millionth bike or scooter trip so far this year. The old bike counter display had both a daily count and a thermometer-style counter that filled up over the course of the year. That thermometer maxed out at one million. When the city first installed the counter with sponsorship from Cascade Bicycle Club, one million was seen as an aspirational number. Seattle just hit that figure before October. Last year, the bridge didn't reach the 1 million mark until mid-December.
