Matthew Knies is a 6-3, 235-pound Brendan Gallagher. On a team chockablock with the overpaid and overrated, Knies always stood out for working like a demon while the rest were counting their sponsors, but the Leafs would rather pay Kirill Marchenko $12.5 miilion per. Fantasy hockey in a real league.

If anyone doesn't understand by now why Kent Hughes didn't land Kirill Marchenko, look at the contract. That's a team-breaker - AND the Leafs gave up a player who is more valuable than Marchenko to get him. Knies was the only player on that roster worth pursuing.

The Blue Jays had Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for six years before they signed him to a 14-year, $500 million contract. They had every opportunity to get to know their man and not only did they get a guy who stopped producing, he doesn't care. It couldn't happen to a more deserving bunch.

I liked George Gillett Jr. My dad would say he's the kind of guy who would shake your hand while he picked your pocket and it was true, but he would entertain you while he was at it.
