In the spirit of copping to bad predictions: I was definitely in the "H100s are gonna depreciate like your car" camp, and boy was I wrong about that one.

Wait, we can replace Starlink? Isn't Canada far too northern to be an efficient/attractive launch site? Or are we just looking at doing the tech development of the satellites?

And they clearly know it! They've been busy buying up island compounds with armed security! Multiple of these guys have doomsday bunkers! For a bunch of guys who claim they're ushering in a new utopia they sure ain't acting like it.

I've been talking a lot with local contractors and architects lately and it's kinda shocking how people are tossing around budgets of ~$1M like that's a totally normal thing.

Right, there are ~no properties in-market with ADUs already. And even putting in a fairly modest one is like "lol $500K USD"

potatolicious @potatolicious.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Not just a zoning/land use thing (though it is) - I live in an ADU-friendly jurisdiction and tried very hard to do this. Construction costs have escalated to such an extreme extent that even in a friendly regime it's nigh-impossible.

The coy "I am joking. Am I joking?" thing is a rhetorical trick that makes SV types feel like they're very clever boys while positing something controversial.
090
potatolicious @potatolicious.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Having known a *lot* of SV brain-poisoned types in my time, it's both: - It's a shibboleth thing: "I am LLM-pilled" - It's also deliberately vague as to if it's a joke: "look how the luddites are reacting to a simple joke"

To be also more LLM-contrarian: this is also why open source isn't going away, despite some proponents claiming "why use [OSS package] when your agent can roll one for you?" Getting something to ship-quality is non-trivial and still has value.
020
potatolicious @potatolicious.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Widespread self-rolling is just not going to be a thing. To the extent SaaSpocalypse will happen it's going to be a more competitive landscape and a greater focus on the operational aspects of SaaS vs. the exclusive-IP bits.
110
potatolicious @potatolicious.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
This (and liability/responsibility) is the reason why SaaSpocalypse is not happening and not likely to happen.
120
potatolicious @potatolicious.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Yep. I think the big change is how fast it is to convert the dollars. Hiring takes a long time and quality is uneven. “Hiring” a LLM takes exactly as much time as you can whip out the company card, and the expected quality is predictable.
010
potatolicious @potatolicious.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Like yeah, scaling overhead, losses from larger organizational drag, etc etc. But ultimately “pay more $ for payroll, get more software” is pretty reliable.
120
potatolicious @potatolicious.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
In all knowledge endeavors this has always been the case I think? There is not a 1:1 perfect translation of dollars to software for example but the ratio is pretty high, and was before LLMs!

So long as there are strong penalties for using the generators in a non-emergency basis (i.e., actual grid power outage) this is... not worse than the emissions from the traffic on Rte 1.
111
potatolicious @potatolicious.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
The main thing to guard against is overuse of those generators, which would be an actual problem. The Elon-plex is running fossil fuel generators full-time as they've exceeded grid capacity.

Alrighty, I feel like I'm obligated to play the "I'm a dualie" card here. I grew up in Canada and have lived in the US for nearly 20 years. The "mass legitimacy" definition of the word *is also* used in Canada. This is all so stupid. The Canadians know exactly what is meant here. Come on people.
270
potatolicious @potatolicious.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
This is the stuff asinine internet arguments are made of. Everyone wants to play both sides of the definition of a word.
080
potatolicious @potatolicious.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Sure but that's also a rhetorical dodge right? Someone uses the word "mandate" to imply the informal meaning that suggests popular legitimacy. But when challenged that the popular legitimacy is extremely thin one runs back to the formal definition.
260
potatolicious @potatolicious.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Aren't we splitting hairs here? There is clearly a colloquial use of "mandate" that's meant here.
270
potatolicious @potatolicious.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Both because of their inability to hold power durably, but also because their internal domestic coalitions are fractured on the issues that matter to Canada.
110
potatolicious @potatolicious.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Ehhh I think Ed's right here. The mandate is very weak and has been both times, but that's also besides the point: regardless of strength of mandate, the reality is that the opposition is too weak to count on.

The only interpretation I have is they are laboring under the notion that "Trump is spectacularly unpopular and therefore all Trump-era policy will be fully reversed", and boy I just don't know where they get that from.
130
potatolicious @potatolicious.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
If anything both electeds and coalition members (see: UAW) have increasingly embraced protectionism! There is a minor constituency that is still pro-free-trade but it's pretty obvious they no longer have enough juice within the coalition!
140
potatolicious @potatolicious.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
I don't know where their mental disconnect is. "Dems are increasingly pugilistic and promising Nuremberg 2.0" - that's good! But that has nothing to do with "Dems will aggressively reverse course on tariffs and protectionism."
130
potatolicious @potatolicious.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
I have no idea how you went from "Canada has no reason to trust the US re: free trade even under the Democrats" to "kys", and quite frankly the fact that you even somehow made that leap is deeply concerning.
120
potatolicious @potatolicious.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
I dunno, some of the folks I talk to are very much in the "once he's out we'll fix it" camp.
100
potatolicious @potatolicious.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
There's just effectively no major constituency for restoring things to the way they were, so why should Canadians act like it?
060
potatolicious @potatolicious.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
It's ridiculous the number of ostensible liberals who think that once Trump is gone things will just kinda revert to the status quo ante. No man, that era is gone - there's little support in your own party for restoring things and your elites are writing op-eds like this one.

The incredibly anemic shape of the Canadian tech industry bugs the heck out of me. In principle Canada is in *ideal* shape to do this (shared time zones and language with the current tech hegemon) but with advantages (saner immigration policy... until now)

These measures *won't* be reversed not because Dems are running scared of the electorate and swing districts, but because their own policy apparatus is no longer uniformly aligned around free trade.
