Postmambo is at La Factoría in Viejo San Juan on a night when the music is so old school that the first number is Chano Pozo’s “El Pin Pin” (1945), celebrating the Allied victory over Japan: “Pin, pin, cayó Berlin, Pon, pon, cayó japón.”

We shared the suite with Will Socolov’s Freeze records, so saw Todd Terry on a daily basis for a while. Jay-Z’s Reasonable Doubt came through / out of our office, because Will brokered the deal with Priority. (No, I never met Jay-Z.) I love New York. /2

Not that hypothetical! Signet and Qbadisc shared a partner, Ben Socolov, and an office. So yes, I met Capleton, Shaggy when he was still in a Marine uniform, hung out at Philip Smart’s, recorded two combinations with Red Fox, etc. . . . /1

They’re not dropping bombs on Cuba, but this is siege warfare. They don’t care if there’s a single Cuban left alive if they can grab the territory and the minerals. All of the 8 million or so left on the island will be traumatized for life as a result of what they’ve experienced just this year.

This is one of the most amazing books I have ever been honored to work on. Around 40 years of oral & documentary history about Selassie's visit to Jamaica and the Caribbean which transformed the place of Rastafarians in Jamaican society. A historic volume.

I keep thinking about this. I wonder who slept under that beautiful quilt, and what it was like when they pulled the solar system over their shoulders at night to protect them from the Iowa winter cold.

In the autumn of 1883, a national paper reported that "an Iowa woman has spent seven years embroidering the solar system on a quilt." Ellen Harding Baker used her stunning quilt to teach astronomy in an era when women could not attend college www.themarginalian.org/2018/12/06/e...

People in local news comment sections are starting to make the connection between US policies towards Cuba and Florida's current dengue situation, which has the potential to make things really interesting with Florida politics if more people start figuring that out.

We also looked at some FSA primary sources and this one really grabbed students' attention. It's a diagram that shows the arrangement of members of the Boston Anti-Man-Hunting League as they would surround a man-hunter, concealing him until he consented to release the person he was trying to kidnap
This diagram, explained by a note written by Henry I. Bowditch, shows the arrangement of members of the Boston Anti-Man-Hunting League as they would surround a man-hunter, concealing him until he consented to release the person he was attempting to kidnap. The League was a secret society founded in Boston in 1854 to resist the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850. The diagram, in pencil and watercolor on brown paper, places the slave hunter in the center (SH), surrounded by the speaker of the committee (S), a member to take hold of the hunter's head (C), two members to take hold of the arms (A1 and A2) and two for the feet (F1 and F2), and twelve additional members to form an outer circle to ward off intruders while the committee conveyed the victim to safety. Bowditch's note continues, "One plagued in this way would not invite others to come & run the same risk of annoyance."
