had lunch with my bestie today. she disclosed that she'd read odyssey in 2018 and rated it a "3" on goodreads. (don't be mean! just thinking about how funny it is that homer got rated a 3 on goodreads after a couple thousand years defining the canon)

You get glimpses of real-life church in John Chrysostom's homilies. Here he is getting annoyed when people start watching the guy lighting the candles instead of listening to him.
We are explaining the Scriptures to you, while you are turning your eyes away from us, and directing them instead to the lamps and the man lighting them. Such laziness! to turn away from us and attend to him. Here am | lighting the fire of Scripture, and the lamp of its teaching is enkindled on my lips

YES. And also there's a difference between 'critical fabulation' and just having a historical imagination that lets you think with context, it's doing specific types of recovery work to deal with problematic archives. So a) don't make shit up and b) do critique the systems behind the sources, too

A graphic soliciting SBL proposals for the Space, Place, & Lived Experience in Antiquity unit by March 9. 1) A panel on space, place, affect, and atmosphere. Possible treatments might be the relation of space, place, affect as they relate to spooky or haunted places; terrifying spaces and experiences of terror; disgusting spaces; ones that are associated with ecstasy; spaces associated with insanity and its experiences; etc. Proposals should include a statement of the theoretical apparatus (for example, cognitive science, Deleuzian frameworks, psychological theories, biological frameworks, etc.) deployed to discuss such dimensions; 2. A screenshot from AbeBooks. To the left: an image of a book cover. It says "World Religions Made Easy: An Easy-to-Understand Pocket Guide" with a picture of candles. A little "sticker" printed on the cover says, "Includes 7 pull-out charts of fifteen truths about Jesus." Underneath, it says, "Stock Image."

In the book details: John Chrysostom, Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, Volume 9, First Series: On the Priesthood; Ascetic Treatises; Select Homilies and Letters; Homilies and Satues [A Select Library of the Christian Church]. The book costs $27.00.
