A remarkable ancient Iberian silver patera (offering dish) with a wolf devouring a human head (!), encircled with snakes. It’s surrounded by two friezes: one showing nine hunting scenes, the other a procession of male and female centaurs. In Iberian culture, the wolf was a psychopomp … 🏺 1/ 📸 me
This silver patera features a sculptural central medallion depicting a wolf’s head with gaping jaws devouring a human head, all encircled by thick snakes. Surrounding this are two friezes: one showing hunting scenes divided into nine sections, and another, separated from the first by a border of dots, depicting a procession of male and female centaurs arranged in a metope-like layout. A gilded running-scroll pattern (<i>postas</i>) around the rim frames the entire scene. Numerous gilded highlights accentuate the figures. Iconographically, the piece combines Hellenistic and Iberian elements.

Beach Scene www.artic.edu/artworks/76907
David Smith found inspiration for his early work in the Surrealist sculptures of Alberto Giacometti and Hans Arp, as well as the paintings of Arshile Gorky and Joan Miró. Among the first American artists to master the use of steel and other industrial materials, Smith worked as a welder at a Studebaker automobile plant, where he gained firsthand experience with metal. He made Beach Scene early in his career, at a time when he was interested in organic forms and an unplanned, autonomous approach to art making: “I do not work with a conscious and specific conviction about a piece of sculpture,” he explained. “It is always open to change and a new association.”

✨Cave Canem✨ We’re not saying this excellent doggo is particularly dangerous, but they are guarding the Casa di Paquius Proculus in Pompeii, so best be careful! Also this doggo comes with a labrys (double axe) and a shield and spear! #MosaicMonday #AncientRome

Beautiful but deadly, wolfsbane (Aconitum napellus), or monkshood, is steeped in werewolf lore. Said to repel werewolves or break the curse of lycanthropy, it also appeared in recipes for witches’ ointments believed to grant powers of flight and transformation. #FolkloreSunday
