Finally had a couple of hours of clear sky last evening so I let the telescope out for a little more than two hours clock time, but only about an hour of actual exposure, so Cygnus was already up in the east and the Western veil nebula was calling me. #Astronomy

AM 1705-773 - From Judy Schmidt (geckzilla.bsky.social) - flic.kr/p/T68ekd
A flocculent spiral galaxy with some of our own galaxy's flocculence in front of it. If you look to the lower right corner, you can see it's a bit darker and muddy-colored. That's our Milky Way's dust. It's thick enough that it seems to completely obscure some of the distant spiral in visible light. It is difficult to tell where our galaxy ends and the external galaxy begins, which almost makes it look like it's attached.

None of the regular color surveys I usually check have contained this galaxy, but color data was kindly provided by William Keel, which he gathered using the remotely-operated SARA 24-inch telescope at Cerro Tololo in Chile.

WOW WOW WOW LOOK AT THIS BEAUTIFUL NEW HUBBLE IMAGE OF NGC 346!!! 🌌
A star cluster within a nebula. The background is filled with thin, pale blue clouds. Parts are thicker and pinker in colour. The cluster is made up of bright blue stars that illuminate the nebula around them. Large arcs of dense dust curve around, before and behind the clustered stars, pressed together by the stars’ radiation. Behind the clouds of the nebula can be seen large numbers of orange stars.

TODAY’S NEW HUBBLE IMAGE SHOWING GALAXY NGC 4941 WHICH IS 67 MILLION LIGHT-YEARS AWAY!! 🌌
A spiral galaxy stretches diagonally across the image, from upper-left to lower-right. At its center is a bright-white, glowing orb surrounded by an inner disk of golden light that is wrapped by a broad outer disk that glows more dimly. The disk holds patchy, broken spiral arms swirling around the galaxy’s core and filled with small blue and pink star clusters. Dark, reddish threads of dust also spiral through the disk, with some strands reaching into the core.

Deep Image of Grand Design Spiral Messier 100 and Dwarf Planet Ceres - From Rolf Wahl Olsen - flic.kr/p/2pmHug7
This deep image shows the grand design spiral galaxy Messier 100. Its prominent and well-defined spiral arms are ablaze with pink HII regions and bright blue supergiant stars. In the centre of the galaxy lies an area of intense star formation visible as a small bright ring surrounding the core. A large faint halo extends far beyond the bright spiral arms.
This magnificent galaxy is located in the constellation Coma Berenices, approximately 55 million light-years away from Earth. At 107,000 light-years in diameter it is one of the largest spiral galaxies in the Virgo Cluster.
Close to Messier 100 lies two satellite galaxies; NGC 4322 to the northeast connected by a bridge of luminous matter, and to the east is NGC 4328. Further away to the southwest lies NGC 4312, an edge-on spiral galaxy with a bright central region and a dusty disk. Numerous other smaller galaxies are scattered across the field, many of which are ultra faint dwarf galaxies with no obvious structure.
In the deep background countless distant galaxies appear, many visibly reddened by the cosmological redshift.

On the 27th March 2023, while some of the image data was acquired, the dwarf planet Ceres (mag 6.9) crossed the field of view, passing slowly in front of Messier 100's outer reaches as viewed from our perspective.
Here Ceres is visible as a bright yellowish 'star' close to the edge of Messier 100, in the 2 o'clock position.
Click here for another version of the image without Ceres.

thinking about this today
This image of the Ring Nebula, taken by Webb’s Near-Infrared Camera, appears as a distorted doughnut. The nebula’s inner cavity hosts shades of blue and green, while the detailed ring transitions through shades of orange in the inner regions and pink in the outer region. The ring’s inner region has distinct filament elements. Stars litter the scene, with a particularly prominent star with 8 long spikes in the top right corner.

A ruddy nebula is pierced through with orange stars on the right side of the image, and a large white star with diffraction spikes shines at lower left. A cavity in the nebula is seen near upper left with bright blue wisps of gas throughout.A nebula with stars. The center of the image from top-left to bottom-right glows brightly with the light of newly forming stars and is partially obscured by dark dust. Colored layers of gas and dust billow out across the rest of the image. Foreground stars with large diffraction spikes speckle the nebula.Thousands of bright stars shine against black space, more tightly condensed near the image’s center. The stars glint in shades of white, blue, and red, and diffraction spikes are visible around the foreground stars.Webb's image of a section of the Flame Nebula, which contains a mixture of reds, blues and browns, and shows red, blue, and white stars.

Expansion of SNR0509 Over 10 Years - From Judy Schmidt (geckzilla.bsky.social) - flic.kr/p/2heWSpn
Presented here is an animation of the supernova remnant SNR J0509.5-6731 expanding over time. It appears to be moving at close to 2% of the speed of light. It is around 163000 light years distant, so it has to move quite speedily for us to be able to witness its movement on a human timescale. The first frame is from 2006, and the second is from 2016. The video shows the two frames blinking back and forth to make the motion easy to see.

Note that only the narrowband (seen here as the red, smooth outline of the nebula) was available to show the nebula's expansion. The star field is essentially a static image, though the narrowband data did also capture some star movement, particularly the bright star to the left of the frame. The Chandra data was simply scaled up to match with the expansion of the shell in the Hubble data.
